AE85 info please :)

Postby Rivit » Wed Oct 26, 2005 8:43 am

I have a ae85 levin and have been wondering what engine to use.. the plan was 4agze but i'd rather a turbo over a supercharger (noise, lag, top end power, other cool things turbos have over superchargers) but as toyota doesn't make a 1600 turbo engine i thought of using the 1300 turbo from a gt starlet (4e-fte?)
what i was wondering was..
would i need custom engine mounts? (assume so)
is there any gearbox that'll mount up? I'm guessing there's not.. I already have a 4age->w55 bellhousing and a w55 so might as well use the box? will the 1300 have enough power to run the w55/hilux dif?
as the 1300 doesn't have too much power would brakes off a ae101 gt-z/apex be good enough? i hear they have twin pots?
any help would be appreciated
cheers

I'm sure you'll get told soon enough.

4AGTE.

Plenty of them around here. It'll give you everything you want...
And for an AE85/6. 4AGE based has to be a must....

For complete bulletproofness W55 with Hilux rear. Again, there are plenty around here.

If you're looking for cheap bang for your buck then this is the best safest way.

I was told putting the 1300 would be cheaper than putting in a supercharged engine and making a ze a te apparently costs alot.. I've seen a couple of engines already turbo'd for sale, round $1500 arent they?
money is quite a factor..

wont be cheaper, by the time you factor in converting a fwd engine to rwd and getting a bellhousing made up.

as stated, its cheaper to go with the 4agte, as the mounts are there and it is a fool proof system, its be done so much, its hard to fcuk it up.

4efte would be sweet, but alot of work involved in setting it up correctly.

how big is wallet is the main thing, a 4efte will still cost you close to a grand.

yer i guess it'd be more difficult with the bellhousing and all..
do you mean the engine itself would cost a grand? ze's are $1500? even more so for a gte?
can anyone suggest some good places to go to get work done?
mitech quoted 10k for engine (turbo, front mount, exhaust, air filter, extractors) supra box, hilux dif, adjustable platform, brakes but i rekn thats quite high..
extreme racing quoted round 6k for ze, front mount, exhaust, air filter, extractors, pulley kit, hilux dif, adjustable platform, brakes
does that seem expensive?

6k is pretty $&#$% good for all that.... depending slightly on engine specs/rebuilt etc.. and brakes used etc..
even 10k is not to bad.. its a lot of work. and for that price im sure they will do a good job.. and in the end u come out with a freaking awesome driveline/engine setup

Christ don't put a 4efte in thats just silly

Get a bluetop or GZE, then turbo it .. easy

you won't need custom engine mounts the AE85 ones work on all 4ages (accept gze supercharger gets in the way)

Think outside the square. And I mean outside the one you're already thinking outside of ;)

Top end power is not the be all and end all. You could have a 4efte with 250hp if you wanted (And money was flowing). But you need to remember, when you take off from the line, you'll be in the low RPM range. Your turbo will not be generating any positive preasure in the intake manifold and it will be acting as a restriction on letting exhaust gasses be vented.
Lag + low displacement engine + body that is heavier than what the engine was designed for = Hard to take off.
Stick with the 4AGE. Its tried and true. The problem with venturing where no one has gone before is that you have no one to reference for possible problems that you could encounter.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

amen

a 4efte isnt worth the hassle. it's like chasing a chick you already know is shit in bed.

they're good enignes, but a little underrated/underpowered. just cos they're turbo, doesnt mean they're quick!! lack torque etc.

6k is a good price, if that includes all the parts etc as well. it is a fair bit of work doing hilux diff/ engine conversion. you would prob want to make sure that that quote is set in concrete haha.

if you want to think outside the square, try a lexus V8. you can pick them up for less than 1g, you can get adapters so they will fit your w55, and unlike import x seems to think, they fit very comfortably in the engine bay with no modification to the firewall. you'l need custom mounts, and possibly a custom sump, but then ur away! will make your hilux diff worthwhile too
