Starlet Turbo S Engine Knock

Post by Graphite »

I bought this cheap starlet, due to the fact it has an engine knock.

It makes a loud kinda tap tap tap tap noise when its idling, for say 10seconds, then the noise goes away for about 15 seconds, then comes back, then goes etc.

Whats this most likely going to be?
Run a bearing I'm guessing, but i thought it would make the noise all the time. when its not making the noise it sound nice n quiet.

yeah, well its more of a tapping than a knocking..
but i thought if it was bearings that it would do it all the time or noisy on startup and then get quieter.
I just dropped it off to me mates to check out.. will see how it goes :)

cannot diagnose any engine noise properly without hearing it and inspecting it.

you will get dozens of responses of its your bigends from people that dont know anything about engines.

bearing noises can vary, in sound, how frequent it is,

take it to a decent mechanic and have them check it over, take the sump off and have a look inside, if a bearing has gone or going, the 'cap' will usually be black due to the heat,

Give it a good engine flush and oil change, if it is tapping and not knocking then it could just be hydraulic lifters just mitsipushi's do all the time

They don't have hydraulic lifters. Could just be bad cam clearances or something simple.

they brake the lifters off as well which may be ur tapping noise, but after having to rebuild my one at 150,000kms and lookn at the big ends it will more likely be ya big ends
