Price of AE82 GT

Just wandering what sort of price you'd expect on a 1988 NZ new Corolla AE82 GT liftback.
81000km genuine, two owners, mint paint (white), perfectly straight, mint leather.
Totally original right down to headunit and speakers.
Had 40000km on it in 2000 when the original owner sold it.
What sort of price are we looking at do ya think?

about 3-4thousand depending on the condition..kms seems a bit a tad suspect though, obviously wasnt driven much..

yeah, I'd say around that price too, but only to someone looking for one. To a non toyota person who just sees it as a 1600 1988 nz new car much less...

Yeah I appreciate what they are highly (duno why, I just always have) well this specific car has been offered to me for $5000. Which even despite the condition and low km and mint interior it still seemed a little high.

Yup that price does seam dam high, but the km's are low. Id pay $3000max prolly for it tho, still a dam old car...
But sounds like the price they want reflects the condition.

I paid $3800 for my 1986 GT ... not quite mint condition, but still in bloody good nick. Leather on the back seats is fine, both front seats need replacing though. No rust, and just a few clicks and squeals that you'd expect from a 20 year old car.

If the car hadn't been modified as it has, it would only be worth about $2000 to me. I would say the people selling the car you want are being quite unrealistic with it.

I would speak to them about it, take a very close look at the car, and point out any flaws you see in it straight away. Take it for a drive and do the same thing. Quite often they will point out a couple of small problems with the car themselves. Make a mental note of as many of these problems as you can, then go back to them and say something along the lines of "I like the car, but its almost 20 years old, has this, this and this wrong with it, and as you pointed out, also has that wrong with it. I will offer you $xx for it, but can't justify spending more than that."

It's not exactly a rare exotic car - it's just a high spec Corolla at the end of the day. I wouldn't pay more than $3k for that.

Depends what you're going to use the car for.

If you are going to put it in a museum, or collection, then buy it at that price if it is as good as it claims to be. Ditto if you're going to drive it once a month.

But, if you're going to use it often, then buy something more common (and newer, because it will be less likely to rust, and probably more comfortable), because you would be wasting the rarity of an uncommon car by just commuting in it. I mean I picked up a 1998 NZ new wagon for $5500, and it doesn't matter if it picks up stone chips, shopping mall door dents etc, because it is just an appliance. So same price, but ten years newer.

The AE82 liftback GT is a very rare car in global terms, because to the best of my knowledge, they were a low production, NZ only car.

But, to the general public... it's an old Toyota that looks like one their grandmother owned.

well I plan on making it just a weekend car, always wanted one. I've had a modern 95 car for the past year and hate it, i've also got a samurai for a run around.
The thing about flaws is...THERE IS NONE! only thing i've noticed is the brake dust wont come off from the holes in the wheels and the front floor matts have been replaced and originals not found. The leather is crack free and the leather wheel is still perfect. The parcel trays in the boot, and the original 1988 spare tyre has never been used (bit plastic like tho)
And the engine is spotless
Only other bad point is the rear tail lights are faded.

Another thing to consider, although it may be worth around $4000 in that condition, the insurance company may not. If an accident happens and the car is written off, they will go by market value, unless you have an agreed value policy. If that's the case, you may only get say $2000~2500.

I still think $5000 is way too much. Think of the other cars you can get for that price..

A car is only worth what someone will pay, having said that, if it is as original as you say there is unlikely to be anything to compare it to so it is worth what the owner will sell it for. I would suspect one could insure it as a classic or something along those lines for agreed value (assuming it is to be kept in said condition and not an everyday driver)...

Professional valuers would be the best people to give an accurate price...

FWIW, $4k or $5k what does it matter, if you want it buy it, you've only got to convince yourself of thevalue not the rest of us... $5k is a lot for an 88 car but what would i pay for one (if i was in the market) I would pay what i had to to secure the car if it was the one i wanted.
