1990 FXGT AIR BOX QUESTION

Postby B1NZ » Tue Nov 01, 2005 5:37 pm

Ok, so after the ex owner of my FXGT putting a pod filter on it, there seems to be a couple of dangly bits in the engine bay where the airbox is supposed to be,

Theres what i think is the air temp sensor which looks like a plastic needle type thing, but then theres a big rectangular box thing that looks like its supposed to be intthere somewhere? Does anyone know what it is?

BTW : smallport redtop 16v non-tvis if that helps!

Can anyone send me a pic of thier engine bay with a factory airbox if possible: B1nz2000@yahoo.com

And if anyone has the airbox etc for sale let me know

Looks like this i think if the FXGT's are the same as the Levin/Trueno AE92

And the rectangular bit is the number 2 in the photo

I was looking at number 2 a few days ago.

It is seperate from the airbox but has a pin sized hole going into it after the filter. It then has a vacum line which goes to the T/B, not sure if its before or after the butterfly, I think its behind.

At first I thought it was to control the idle but I have no idea.

i already guessed no 1 was a resonator, number 2 is the problem? Debateing wether i need to plumb it back in, get a custom intake pipe made up or get the factory air box

I figured this out ages ago when I had my FX, but so long ago that I have forgotten exactly what it was?

I think from memory indide that box there is a VSV that is used for a/c idle up or similar?

I just threw the spare airbox I had like that out last week too.

That would make sense as theres a small hole leading into it and a line going behind the TB. Some sort of idle control. Thanks now I know I can remove it 8)

its definatly an idle up - dunno about a/c, i thought that was done on vaccum .If you pull the hose out that goes to the throttle body the idle speed goes through the roof, block the hose and the idle speed drops (stalls the car sometimes too 8) )

i am currently modifying the vsv (number 2) to go in the cold air box i made. its a bit of a mish to make it look good and work at the same time

in answer to your question i think its probably better if you leave it there as its part of the factory cold air box.

thats what i thought, i have to get the airbox as the previous owner binned it and left the air temp sensor and the other dangly bit floating in the engine bay.

Could these sitting on a warm gearbox next to the engine be a reason for exsessive fuel consumption?

I would have thought if the ECU were reading higher intake temperatures it would dump less fuel.

I have just sorted this prob on my AE82. But I never saw a needle.

Just two bits of piping. One going to a solinoid and the other to some fuel/idel thing.

Looking at my mates car. They needed to go into a T joint with the smaller one going in the side of the T befor the idel sensor.
Have put a hole in the duckting that leads from the Pod to the intake. Works great and now my revs do not bounce when ideling. This was annoying as it would go so low at times it would stall.

Sorry I do not have access at work and do not have a digi cam. Will try and get one off a mate and see if I can load some pics for you.

This is for an 1985 so it works in air sensors. if you have one that is map it might be a little different. But should be similar.

Will see what I can do
