KE70 with a 4K and K40.

When you push the clutch in and select reverse, it makes a loud grind/clunk sort of noise...only does this when selecting reverse.

Anyone point me in the right direction for what I should be looking for?

Nah, I don't think it is that.

Have had the car a few weeks, and it used to be fine, then I went to engage reverse last night, and it just started doing it...it's quite loud, not something that has gradually crept up...

Put it in second, then reverse. Is it smooth then?

Yup, it's smooth if you engage a gear first, as long as you don't push the clutch in and out between shifts and just hold the clutch in the whole time.

I thought it was normal, all the Toyotas we have ever owned have done this.

IIRC you dont have synchros in reverse, only straight cut gears. hence the 'whine'.

But perverts problem sounds like something else.

Im fairly sure I know *exactly* the noise you are talking about, had the same thing in my starlet. But in every gear. :lol:

I havent pulled it the old gearbox apart yet to have a look though.

Have you tried checking the Gbox oil level? Mine died from lack of oil.

Nah, I haven't got that far yet...the rest of the box's operation seems fine though...

Mine sounded like.... having your ear right up to a washing machine full of spoons..... and horrible scraping metal sounds.

All gears still worked, it just sounded unbearably horrible.

Sounds like its being droped into, not engaging.... sort of thing?

Occasionally all my cars have done this (bar the subie, which just was an ARSEHOLE to get into reverse).

I just make sure i push it into second or third before selecting reverse.

i thought real men dont care about noises

i just slap it in 2 4th then quickly in2 reverse every time. my 2c :twisted:

Yes, that does work...but I can't understand why it would be perfectly fine, then next time it's really $&#$% bad... :lol:

Syncros wear, they don't just give out instantly right...

Reverse is straight cut...

It might a broken little metal piece inside the box which is floating around and got stuck. That way when you put it into revers that piece might be getting caught in the rotating parts and making that sound somewhere?

I have seen this happen....the only way to verify really is to remove gearbox and take apart.

Just a suggestion to what it might be.

Is your clutch adjusted properly? If its still just dragging and spinning the input shaft slightly then it'll go into gear nicely due to synchros, but would grind going into reverse due to straight cut gears. Just a maybe...

my ke35 / 4 speed done the same thing, so i put a 4age with a t50 in and it still does it :twisted:

I think thats cos my clutch isn't working properly now though - i need slightly more throw on my pedal or something. :oops:

1st and reverse have no syncro's
reverce is strait cut
it making the noise only whilke inguaging or when attually moving as well ??

if its just inguaging you need a new clutch or your cable has streched and that needs replacing

if its while moving as well you need to get a new box ..sounds like yourve bured the gear and its not riding nicely anymore
