gt4 wastegate not opening

Postby ben » Sun Nov 13, 2005 11:29 pm

The wastegate on my gt4 doesn't open (boost just builds and builds until you hit fuelcut). I haven't had a good look at it yet (the engine hasn't cooled down since I bought it) - but I've been told the spring may have siezed or the actuator arm just needs some lube.

Are there any howtos on the net or tips to be taken when dissasembling the wastegate and lubing it up?

If its the internal wastegate take a good look at the wastegate acuator arm.

It is probably ceased, move it in and out and lube it up should do the trick. However it could be rusted up or bent or pourposly jamed! I dont think you need to pull it apart and lube the internals, just free it up and lube the arm a bit.

For pics of what it looks like just google. Its basically the round bit thats not your turbo with a bit of metal poking into it that can move in and out.

Or get a 38mm tail, they are pretty cheap now and sound awesome!

If it has ceased (sorry, siezed  ), you'd probably be better off getting a replacement actuator IMHO.
A Tail (oops, I mean Tial  ) external will require a lot more work to fit and wouldn't be worth the time, money and effort involved unless you are planning a much higher than standard power output.

of course you're never going to need an external gate on a ct26, unless you're running a heft shot of nitrous

Nah I been boosting lots - I just try and keep it below 10psi (it goes 10->15 too quick and hits cutout).

Is it bad to drive without the wastegate operating? I thought the ECU prevented any permanent damage? I've got really good at avoiding the fuelcut.

Yeah but do you really want to drive around trying not to hit boost cut??
You can't bury your foot when you know it's going to hit fuel cut!! It's not a big fix try loosen the Acuator Arm this will more then likely be the problem..

Its not something like a hole or leak in the hose leading to the actuator is it? Probably pay to check that as well

I think the easiest test procedure would be-

1 - disconnect line that comes from compressor housing and goes to actuator (very short)

2 - attach a pressurised air feed to the actuator - does the actuator arm move? - if yes then the hose you just removed must have been leaking, and may be cracked, or the outlet from the compressor housing is blocked. if no, continue...

3 - can you hear air leaking from anywhere? if so find the source of the leak (should be fairly easy) and repair (it may be the actuator leaking, in which case replace it), if no, continue

4 - if you grab the actuator arm can you get it to move out from the actuator? should only be a cm or so. If no, then actuator is seized, if yes then....? Not much else it could be, assuming the downpipe is factory, maybe someone stuck something in the wastegate ports for more boost :)

Its called DETONATION, and though the ECU will limit any major damage, it is in no way completly avoiding it.

It may not be detonating, but trust me, you really don't want to find out the hard way!!

(May end up spending as much money on your motor as I have otherwise. And that was all because I blew a weld out of the centre of my intercooler  )

Well I'll try and take it quietly until the weekend then. I want to give myself a few hours to take the i/c off and so on so that I've got room to move down there.

That engine bay is tighter than... a tight thing!

Thanks for the advice all_fours - really helpful! :D
