Eating oil real fast - need help

Postby *Steph* » Tue Nov 15, 2005 6:34 pm

My 20 valve silver top 4AGE seems to be using more oil than it should be. It aint buring it or leaking anywhere and i can't think of where else it would be going. I have to top it up like every 2 weeks!!

Any ideas?

How do you know if it's not burning?

If it runs out that fast the oil must be going sumwhere....
Take the valve covours off and check inside whether it's not the gasket that's blown and oil leaking in there.

Otherwise park the car overnight with some newspaper under it and check in the morning. You'll immediately be able to see whether it is actually leaking oil and in which vacinity it is coming from.

in regards to the 2E. :) Prolly the rings. These engines burn oil like nothing else, and dont smoke much at all...

 Buy some Fuchs Titan 70-40 oil. TREACLE. but works a treat. and only $20 bucks for 4 litres. Should quiet down the engine generally also.. Nice.

How much oil are you putting in every 2 weeks (from max to min on the dip stick for example , or less?)? and what mileage has the car done?...if its begining to get up there its not unusual for many 4ages (16 and 20v) to begin using a little.
also are you sure its 70-40? Ive never come accross a winter rating being higher than the later...i.e are you sure its not 10w40?

It's only done 120 000 k. After a few weeks, its dropped down quite a bit, like half way down dip stick. Nah i don't use the 70-40 in my car, that's just what some people have said to use.

quite right, I appologise- been studying for about 15 hours straight, I misread.
Although it does depend on km's done and how one drives, Im sure there are some here who use that amount of oil in two weeks, but yea, it is on the high side really imo.
As Silent Knight suggests, try parking it over some paper to look for leaks (although for that much oil in 2 weeks it should be obvious if leaking) also get someone to stand outside the car and do some hard accleration starts as well as sitting with it idleing for a while also to see if it burns any- its not always obvious from inside the car.
another thought, although not overly likely is if you have not had a service for a while. Ive noticed particularly in 4ages over service periods the oil tends to break down more- getting blacker & thicker, hence reducing the volume.

qw1kgt, can you point me to where 70w40 fuchs is sold, seen the brand many times, but never that grade...(nor do I expect I will...)

I'm thinking the rings are screwed and you're getting a lot of blow by.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.
