Gettin a friggen alternator out

Postby Adamal » Mon Nov 14, 2005 9:03 pm

So I'm trying to whip mine out, but I seem to be stuck.

I've taken the pivot bolt out and everything else is out, but still won't come, feels as if theres still a bolt in there. So would I be right in guessing that there could be a sleave in there?? Does anyone have any tips on getting this out?
It's about to make me totally flip out and kill the whole town, and when theres no one left, I'll commit seppuku by eating a frisbee!!!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Is this on the AW11 or an the SW20?

If its on the SW20 just get a big hammer and hit it, and the repet until it comes off.

If its on the AW11...take someone elses advice...

Most have a bushe which the bolt slides through, It selfadjusts when you tighten the bolt to take out clearance between the mounting and swivel ends of the Alt, sometimes they can wedge up quite tight, Usually I just pry between the Alt and mounting post and it will usually budge.

If the swivel bolt and adjustment bolt are out theres nothing else holding it in place bar the wiring.

Oh, sorry, its on the SW20.

I think the sleave only goes in halfway. Getting in there with a hammer is a rather difficult task :?

if its difficult to reach with a swinging hammer use a long thin bit of wood to reach it with and hit the wood. means no dammage to alternator :)

I'm not really TOO fussed about this alternator, as I've got another one on its way :)

Oh well, I know what to do:

"Hey Braaaaaaad...." :D

had the same problem, just use a (long, sturdy) screw driver as a lever between the alt and block and just rip the bugger out

Invest in some lever bars, you'll find them handy for all sorts of things. One of them being getting alternators off

Well, it was a tight squeeze, but I got it out of there. Then the hard part was getting it out of the engine bay!

After removing heaps of things, I got it out, only to find my replacement alternator is a bit big, so I'm gonna have to take off the whole alternator bracket to get it in there!

I'm starting to hate cars :?

Buy a KP starlet.

Easiest car to work on... ever.

For example I removed the entire exhaust system on mine this arvo... Took less than 15 minutes all up.

On the SW20, to do the same thing, it took half a day.

Nobody ever better expect me to change the alternator in their SW20

Almost done with mine, just having trouble getting the adjuster bolt hole in place. Jams against the bracket! Time to get sanding...

If you saw my problem for yourself, you would understand. Explaining it on the net is a little difficult.

However, after a few unorthodox methods, its now in.

By the way, since when do you 'change' wiper fluid? :P

I change my wiper fluid all the time, only the purest, deionised + distilled water goes in the mr2, once it's a couple of days old you don't know what crap might be in it....

You might want to put a filter or three in the lines, just to be sure. 8)
