Coilovers vs Superlows vs Other springs...

Postby GGnz » Tue Nov 15, 2005 10:51 pm

Looking at lowering my car soon but not sure what I want. TRD Springs will only lower it 25-30mm which personally I feel isn't enough.

Pretty much I want the car to be rather low but at the same time want some decent performance/handling on the road.

I have been informed coilovers are good for this but sometimes can have problems sticking to the road around corners etc. This is currently what I am looking at getting.

Superlows obviously lower the car lots as well but yet Kings are generally shit etc.

Slowly I am intending to build it to a show car which can have a bit of go at the same time.

Just wondering peoples opinions on this on what to go for (whether it be coilovers or superlows). Baring in mind I wont be breaking the speed limit when cornering  .

Ive had lowering springs in my trueno and they never lower enough so i brought a set of brand new daiyama ccg coilovers and they are MINT you cant beat coilovers because you can adjust them up and down to whatever hight you want :D

in my opinion, there is very little point having coilovers on anything but a racecar, and why?
first of all, you need a bit of experience to set them up, make sure you have them all at the same height etc

secondly, and far more importantly, the suspension geometry changes at different heights, meaning any time you change the height you would really need to get a wheel alignment, as things like the toe settings would change. also the roll centers need to be altered to get ideal camber change characteristics on mcpherson strut suspension when you change the height, and this isn't something that can be done quickly (unless you have a set of different thickness rollcenter adjusters). finally bump steer could become a massive problem as the angles change on the steering arms.

if you want good handling on the street, get some good springs, TRD would probably be a safe bet, and some good shocks (get adjustables if you like). If you want to go really low, you're not going to get good handling without a lot of other work, such as adjusting roll centers, altering steering arms to the right geometry, getting short shocks (not just shortening factory length ones), shortening the strut housings etc

also once set up, coilovers will not act any differently on the road/track to non adjustable struts with the same spring rate and shock valving

Real so how much would it lower at back/front?

Say front like 45mm and back 35mm or what?

What are you doing with your old Jamexs? Are they for superstrut and would they fit AE111?

try them first though...

guessing a little here, but if "aesc" has a gtz, his engine/gearbox will be heavier than yours, and jamex don't tend to make different spring rates for different model variations, so the extra weight in the front would make it sit lower, in an NA the difference is likely to be less...

in my aw11, when it had the SC motor and box it sat lower at the back on jamex springs, but when I sold them to someone with an NA his car sits level.

When I first got my Jamex's put in, it lowered the front about 40-45mm and the back about 20mm (seriously) I reckon, so yeah sat noticeably ass high.

Apparently Jamexs only have one type of spring for S/S and non S/S so they are the same, so would fit your ae111. My rear springs have been basically been cut in half and the fronts have been compressed about 20mm so they are basically worthless, I wouldnt sell them to anyone I knew.

As for the weight diff between a GTZ and a BZG, I'd say it might effect the ride height <5mm in the front.

Dont know what ill do with my old shocks and springs, maybe put them on Trademe for $1 reserve

I'd look into Santa's springs to be honest, sounds like they are Dobis which are a good spring
