insane electrical problem - urgent

Postby EVL20V » Thu Nov 17, 2005 9:44 pm

ok. where to start.

i had a radar detector in the car yea, i had cut it out a few months back, and tonight i decided to reinstall it. i took off some dashboard and found the rest of the radar wire (which was wired to the igniton) so i went to reattach the radar wire to the old bit of it and connected it, with electrical tape. turned the igniton on and OH #$%@#! smoke everywhere, big panic. turn off key and took battry off. (lucky i have an extinguisher in the car ! ) but didnt have to use it 8)

so anyways, i unwrapped all wireing from under the dash and removed every trace of the %#$%#@ radar wire. and its all gone now. but it keeps blowing the 15 amp fuses in the engine bay fuse box. have checkd all earthing connections and shit, but nothing looks unusal. even with positive off the battry there is 12v going through the 15amp fuse plug thats blowing all the time 8O any help?

Seems odd that you can blow the fuse with no battery connected...

Sounds like you've crushed a wire somewhere when putting the dash back together or something like that. Either way you've got a live wire being earthed somehow

sorry...so you are saying with the battery disconnected you are still getting 12v?

as far as it blowing, althought you have removed all traces of the wireing it had, since it smoked, its possible it has melted the loom somewhere between the battery and the inside of the car. Since the fuse blew, it shouldnt have done that, but its a small possibility ive come accross before when someone connected an accessory up incorrectly afew years ago in their car
HRT's comments are more likely however.

1) try speak english, not TXT TLK!
2) sounds like you have grounded a positive wire to the chassis/earth

sounds abit like my problem, the 15amp efi fuese.... if i floor it on a cool night then but the brakes on it blows and stalls the engine.... kills fuel, no ideas why this would me? its always when the revs are backing off, or clutch is in an braking, and only if I push to redline

Well, often the fuses can be for several different systems, for example, my dash kept blowing its' fuse, giving me no guages, or interior lights. Traced some wires through the car, found it was also connected to the indicator relay. I had a look at the rear lights, turns out that when my car had a towbar, someone had rangi'd up lights, just hooked up wires directly into the positive, and hadn't insulated them at all, just soldered them and left them.. consequently, it had worn away at the chassis til it found an earth, and *bang*.

My advice, find a loom diagram, find out which fuse it keeps blowing, and see what else the fuse is connected to.. then check it all over.
