Need a new gearbox

Postby ollieboy » Sat Nov 19, 2005 1:49 am

Well the first question I am asking is can a 5 speed gearbox fit in where a 4 speed was. I have this Starlet that I am looking at putting a new gearbox in because the old one causes excessively high fuel consumption.

Anyway the one in there at the moment is a 4 speed one.

I am looking to replace it with a 5 speed one but don't know if this is possible. How much do you think I could pick a gearbox up for or does anyone on here have one that I could buy that would fit? Also how long do you think it would take to replace a gearbox? I am looking at replacing the whole gear shizz with it as well like the clutch and flywheel cause the one I have at present is fuggered.

I'm assuming its an old Kp starlet with a K series engine, then yes a K50 (5 speed) will bolt straight into where the old 4 speed (K40) was .

and if it is than its a pretty easy job you can do in a day/afternoon/evening if you can spin a spanner (and have all the bits required).
If fwd would take a little longer, but still a single day job easy.
Cant believe im still a member here.

Yeah I just had a look in the engine bay and its an EP70.

So where would I pick up a gearbox from and how much do you think I should expect to pay?

Would a car dismantler have one, anyone know any good ones in CHCH?

cheers
