failed wof, what do to to fix?

Postby Dirtbag » Fri Nov 18, 2005 4:23 pm

Just got my failed wof on my 91 trueno gt-apex S/S
has a leaking front shock, what can be done to fix this?

Also, I now have definite proof that the owner before me (6 months ago) got his last wof at a dodgy station, even though he told me he would get it done @ AA etc. Couple of problems that have been there the whole time popped up as fails also, power steering belt, door strap, other little things.

What parts etc will I need to get the front shocks fixed, just need a decent list so I can ask revhead for quotes etc

Thanks

Front shocks would be the ideal parts to fix leaking front shocks.

Why don't you just ask Warwick (Mr Revhead) for those items and quote your complete chassis number.

I'm guessing you will need:

Front shock - buy a complete unit as they are very cheap from Toyota @ the mo.

Power Steering belt - and maybe a new tensioner :?

Door Strap - ??? Whats that? :?

Please list the other 'little things' that failed as sorry but I don't think anyone on T.S. is a mind reader and can see your car or your WOF sheet from their computers.

Cheers

Or if you reeeally need a wof, and can't afford new shit right now, degreaser is only $2.20 a can at Supercheap. Take it out, clean it up, tell the wof man you got it 2nd hand from a wrecked car, it has worked both times for me, including at a VTNZ testing station!

if you're refering to doing this for the shock, could work, but it would rely on the shock not being that bad. if its bad enough, they're still gonna know that somethings not right from their test drive.

i noticed just recently that it kinda squeeks (the shock) when i come down off our drive onto the street, and if i take judder bars a bit to fast, if i did degrease it, the testing man would probably still notice that and think it was a bit sus

Ugh... Super SLUT suspension!

Taking a strut out to change the shocks isn't as easy as a McPherson strut. Couple bolts out the top, couple out the bottom and she's out.

S/S though, you've got quite a few connecting arms and stuff...

Where does it say he got his last warrant from? Just wondering because you could take it back to them and complain that you got a dodgy warrant. If you could find out the name of the place and could tell me that would be cool. I don't want to go there (I'm clean now) I just want to see if its the same guy that I used to go to because if he is still doing dodgy warrants I may be owed quite a bit of money by him. :P

Silly me deleted his number off my cell a couple of weeks ago, I remember which street he lives on though! Haha

I think I remember him working at a service station, so Im thinking he probably just took it there and got one of his mates to "look it over" and tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick etc.

Now, whats the story with driving the car? I am only allowed to drive it on the way to and from repair shops and WOF place correct?

all wof stickers should have the following details on them - place that WOF was issued, vehicle number plate/registration, system authority and WOF expiry date. so shouldn't need to contact the person that you bought the car off.

as for driving the vehicle, has the existing WOF expired yet? if so, then yes the only time that you are supposed to be driving the vehicle to and from the repair places and wof inspection place. as i recall, if the wof is still current you can still drive the vehicle wherever.

Halswell Challenge was where the warrant was from.

Back when I first got the car, I noticed a squeeking sometimes over harsh bumps but I put it down to the front kit having a bit of a crack in it and rubbing/squeeking against itself etc. (I had no reason to suspect shocks etc as they had just been wofed

Could the squeeks have been caused by the leaking shock etc or by any other problem that should have been picked up in a warrant?

We accepted the car on the terms that it passed the WOF, but now looking back, it would seem the WOF wasnt as authentic as we would have come to expect, which annoys me, deceitful car sellers :x

p.s. revhead, u have a email for the shock pricing, i can source the door strap eg from an uncle who works @ hursts

the problem of using wof as the measure of the car being in a decent condition is
* WOF is a visual check
* mechanics are not obliged to tell you of other problems that they notice during the assessment, eg oil leaks. Most will though since it generally makes them more money

yeah, true true

The cars done 176xxxkm, around 180 or so dont they usually have problems with the superstrut camber arm or sumthing? Does replacing the front shocks also replace all those little fiddlys?
