Whoops wrong oil filter!

Postby Boldy » Mon Nov 21, 2005 7:55 am

Did an oil change on my gf's fxgt 20v yesterday and noticed this morning that the guy from Albany toyota gave me the wrong part! The filter on the car has a part number 90915-10003 and is listed for 4A-FE etc and the part number for a 4A-GE is 90915-10004. Are the filters compatible? Damn should have checked the box before I put it on!

Well, the oil filter screws onto the block, and they're both 4A blocks so I don't see why there should be any problem.... If the shoe fits!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

yeah it fits fine, no leaking around the filter or anything. I was thinking maybe the 4AGE filter has better filtration or something, being the higher revver.

Yeah, you're probably right there.

I'd make sure to use some engine flush next time you do and oil/filter change. Just to be on the safe side ;)

I use a 10003 filter on my gtz even though the 10004 is listed for it. The only difference is that the 10003 is shorter. I have to use it because I don't have enough clearance for the 10004 because of my headers.

Its not a biggie

yep its fine..... depending on the year they list 10003 or 10004
the aftermarket equivalant is the same fitler...
10004 is bigger therefore my choice.

No I don't, I probably should get one made up but meh. I cant see it making a huge difference to the overall oil temperature in the engine.

I was meaning more the oil temp inside the filter, heat oil and it will cake up, meaning the filter will be less effective at filtering.

Oil gets pretty hot inside the engine anyway, doubt it would make that much difference... 8)

with most things, there is usually a reason why they went with a shorter one. subaru used a short filter in my last car because it tended to cook if one that "fitted but was taller" was fitted. my mechanic fitted one that was taller... it cooked, the engine made an expensive sounding noise, blew a heap of smoke out of the engine bay(oil filter sits just next to exhaust)...

Thankfully it had just burst the filter and spilled oil everywhere, but it was caused by too much heat(it got sent away and checked out by some subaru service centre apparently)...

so thats my life story lol.

if oil is flowing and getting cooled as it should in a properly working system then it should be fine....

however there probably are some applicastions that are more prone to that than others

Yeah possibly, but change my oil and filter every 3 months or 3000kms so probably not much chance of it happening to me
