SW20 MR2 models - Info please

Hey all.

My friend was looking at buying an MR2. He's seen a 97 MR2 G-Ltd (but it was a little out of his price range) that he liked and asked me if I knew what the different models were.

GT = Optional Everything (inc leather seats, and Cd Player)
GTS = Optional Everything (exc leather seats, and Cd Player).

there was also a G - steel wheels, maybe manual steering? I dunno but this was the crappest
also NZ new ones might be called different things than G, GT etc

Weren't the ones without power steering in the first model SW20 only? Like 1989-91?

Non powersteering models were rather uncommon.

NZ new SW20s arent G, or G limited or anything...

Just.... MR2. According to Adamal at least. :P

I have a 'G' spec SW20, and it has power steering, the 'upsized for 50c' factory sound system, aircon, power windows, etc. etc.

Ive seen G limiteds with fewer options than mine....
it means SFA really, just find one with the options that you want, and get it. 8)

This only applies to the american NA SW20s, which were very crappy. :?
They did have a few desirable things for the weight nazis though, like wind down windows, manual steering rack, hard top roof, etc.
However they came with just as many crappy things, like steel wheels, 5SFE :?
none of this applies to any MR2 you will buy in NZ however.

this is not entirely true. My friend owned a 3sge sw20 hardtop with manual wind windows + manual steering. Brought and sold in NZ.

Yeah sorry, I didnt explain myself very well.

What I was trying to say, is that you dont have to worry about accidentally buying the 'crappy' version of the MR2, like you would if you were in the UK or the US.

Any NA MR2 that you can buy in NZ has the same brakes, same motor, alloy wheels, etc. etc. (year for year at least)

Things like manual steering and wind down windows were an option, but very rarely taken... Most people preferred the power options obviously.

In NZ, It doesnt matter if you buy a 'G' or a 'G limited' you cant go wrong, so long as you find one with the options you want. There isnt going to be a surprise 3 months later when you find out that you have the model with a 3sfe, crappy brakes, crappy gearbox etc...

As the 'crappy' version of the SW20 (The SW21) wasnt available for sale in NZ or Japan. 8)

Sorry but you are wrong. I had a NZ new 1990 SW20 with a 3sfe in it, stock, my father owned this car from new. I ran the bearings in it. From memory it didnt have either the G or G Limited badging, however I could be wrong on that point.

Are you serious???? Wow... How much did he pay for it???
They sold on average about 2 a year. So either mine is the other one or its that one with a 3SGE in it :D

the 3sfe one is still an sw20... the 5sfe ones were sw21.

manual steering isnt that unusual... i have no problems finding 2nd hand manual racks
