Petrol in NZ (not a price rant)

Mobil ripped up there tanks not long ago, so i doubt they will put it in,

I wrote to mobil awhile ago about the possibility of getting 98 in the south island & basically they said no go because they have no storage facilities for it down here.
But yes mobil does seem to be a cleaner petrol to shell, id agree with you on that one mr revhead.

I Second that Rolla... Ive given up on my local shell (i even used to work there) and started going to the mobil up by work...

Well, I remember that when everytime my brother fill up petrol in the estima, he go and clean the lip of the "add on exhaust tip" (since the outlet lip got 45' degree angle) .
From memory, everytime when he fill up at Challenge in few years back, the exhaust tip will turn very black.
If he get the fuel from other petrol station, some will be very clean!
I'll ask him which is which and i hope he remember..

Also, i tried a 1989 1.3L ford laser which normaly take 96 and I put in 91, it will ping very easy.. I also tried BP 98 once when going from Palmerston North to Auckland with the same car, and the car seems to not like it at all... so I have to mix it with 91 at Taupo to balance it out and car runs lot better after that..

But dont ALL the major fuel companies, mobil, shell, caltex use marsden point as their refiner....so all their fuel would be the same? Only different one would be Gull which import refined petrol from overseas...

At this stage Shell NZ are not going to be offering 98 as an option, Shell Australia are selling this in some states but the demand is so great for it that they would not be able to supply the NZ market as well. It is something that Shell NZ are looking at in the futures but we do not have a date to offer our customers.

pffft america first, what a surprise.

I use mobils 98, i have found that to be the best compared to all other fuels, i didnt like BP's much for some reason, my car acted like it was on 95? (this was shortly after it came out, maybe it was 95 ), just didnt have as much pull higher up in the rev range, idle was a little worse too.

Other than that i do try and use gulls 97, that isnt bad either. But there arnt many gulls around here.

I think its bad to put 96-98 into a 91 car....

My mate did that to his nissan laurel once and it fully $&#$% up something, i don't remember what though. don't you need a tune to support 98 in a 91 car such as my rolla?

It wont hurt it by having higher octane fuel than what its meant to, but it wont make sod all difference unless you change things to suit.
Leaded fuel can mess with newer cars though.

Na youd be surprised about the figures aye.
70% of petrol sold in New Zealands is imported.
40% of diesel sold is also imported (but this figure has dropped, dont know what to. Its because of the new low sulphur diesel.)
The New Zealand oil refinery can Supply New Zealand with enough fuel, but it works out cheaper to import some and blend it with the fuel that is made here. This is why New Zealands fuel isnt as clean as other countries, as 70% of the petrol has spent months at sea in a dirty old ship!!.
