results of bluetop cams in smallport redtop FAQ ME!

Postby gordon77 » Mon Nov 21, 2005 12:50 am

hey ppl just got home from a long day replacing the cams in my smallport. it was a large mission as i snapped the head off the bolt for the alternator (again :() and took all day and some of the night. i did the timing and advanced it to 10 degrees @ 800 rpm. im not sure if this is the optimum place for it but its what the sticker on the underside of the bonnet said 8)

take into consideration before you read this. there is only one mod to the performance of this engine, a pod filter in a cold air box as seen here

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b233/ ... 240555.jpg

this is all in your seat information, no dyno figures here

Before: the power came on reasonably hard at about 5000-5500 and pretty much held untill about 6700. there was very little power to be had before 5k.

After: the power comes gradually from about 4300. this is more noticible because there was sweet f all there before. when it gets to about 5000 it starts to come to maximum power. there is more power here than previous but is not as noticeable as this is where the power came on before. but there is still a gain in this region. it carries on to about 6700 where i think the power drops off and i started thinking i should shift up a gear @ 7k

so yeah thats about it. there is more to come... im looking at getting adjustable cam gears to get it that little bit more effective.

this is deffinatley a very good power gain for the $60 i spent on the cams.

I take it you did it with the diagnostic connector bridged (as you meant to)
Otherwise you may just bee feeling the advance difference.

Dyno before and after or it doesn't mean crap.
Like the people who get a huge increase in power at 4500rpm once they remove they're tvis. What they really get is a huge loss in power below 4500rpm :?

Why only rev it to 7k? My smallport goes hapily to 7750.

Im thinking about doing this so might have to go get my car dynoed before I do the cam swap, then have another run afterwards.
