home audio vs car audio gear.

Whats the difference?

I mean surely a 6" "designed for home stereo" speaker is the same as a 6" "designed for car audio" speaker?

cost wise they seem the same($$ = sucks, $$$+ = Good), spec wise they seem the same(or very similar).

or am I just totally wrong here?

impendence, thiele/small parameters and rms ratings may all be different and they all have an affect on the resultant sound from speakers..

Almost all home speakers are designed to work in a large box. They are also designed to work in the far field (meaning you sit a fair way away from them).

Car speakers are designed to work either in a small box or infinite baffle (i.e a door), and are designed to work in the near field (i.e you're sitting closer to them).

Car speakers can work in home, and vice versa, but the goals are quite different so its usually best to buy drivers designed for a given task unless you are willing to rebuild your entire doors to suit home drivers :)

I would say cheap car speakers and cheap home speakers are more or less the same, good car speakers or good home speakers, now theres a different story.

well most home audio speakers are 8ohm (if im correct)

and car audio gear is usually 4ohm

in short, this means if you want to power your home audio speakers in the car with an amp, you need twice the grunt to power them to the same level as you would if they were 4ohm.

i think thats right.......
I had vtax :(

Yep thats right, im sure home audio speakers have a higher sensitivity too meaning you need less power to get them going as loud .
