Tyre Wear.......

Postby FST4RD » Sun Nov 27, 2005 10:39 pm

Bought a '92 Mitsi GSR (yes mitsi..) of my mate bout a month ago, he bought a brand new set of 17" wheels and tyres (champiro 205/35/17) about 10 months before i bought it, got a balance and wheel alignment as well.
I noticed yesterday that about 2" on the inside of both front tyres is down to the steel bead and the rest of the front tyres have got no wear at all, almost brand new, the rear tyres look almost brand new all round with no wear. There's only slight curbing on the left front tyre.
I reckon this cant be right...... can it?? Dodgy wheel alignment??
I bought them from mag and turbo in chch and i'm going to see them tomorrow.

I used to get the same thing on the front wheels of my corolla...

Which was courtesy of the inside front wheel spinning up when cornering hard, and the jelly suspension.

Could be that, how hard do you drive it?

Or negative camber was my initial thought, before I even opened this thread.

I dont drive it hard at all.... and my mate that owned it before me was like 50 something and i never seen him put his foot down once out of the 6 years he owned the car!!
The tyres have got about 10,000k's on them, no negetive camber.
I think mag and turbo dodn't do something right for the tyres to wear that fast, would i be correct in saying that??

You'd probably be able to see camber like that. I reckon it'll be serious toe out... either way, your wheel alignment cost a set of tyres.

Take the car to a specialist wheel alignment place.

What that man said 8) Something is deff out of place if your getting wear like that, better to pay a few $$'s and have it checked by those in the know 8)

have you managed to hit any potholes, gutters, big ruts, travveling at decent speed over railway tracks etc

all of these will throw your alignment out, im betting that M&T wont admit jack and send you packing

only way to prove it is if somebody (you or them) have a copy of the wheel alignemt printout

well the thing is that you let go of the steering wheel and it still goes perfectly straight with no pull to either side........

that could still be the toe settings

when you turn a corner at low speed (ie as you turn all the way round to full-lock) does it suddenly grab and 'pull' you round either way?
thats what happened when i did my spring/shock change before my alignment, within driving 50kms, i had chewed about a mm of tread depth off on the insides of my front wheels! (bad enough wear from my minimal camber and expensive 18" tires without adding extra toe-load)

me predicament is probably similar - turbo 4wd, lowered with 'low' lowering springs, piss all wear on the rear, but plenty on the inside shoulders of the front tires
shit happens :P

I'd go for toe being waaay out as well.

I lowered a car substatially, and never got a wheel alignment, it did exactly the same as what yours has done to my tyres, almost new on the outside, down to the steel on the inside, when I got a wheel alignment the toe was way out... 8)

Joys of lowering a mitsi.

Drop the back end, the geometry of the rear end means itll get some camber going on. Watch one launch from behind and you'll see it in graphic detail, it splays its legs out in a big way. Lowering the rear end a bit much has the same effect.

No camber adjustment at the back on them either, least on the VR4's (which share much the same components) - short of spacing out some parts of the rear end with washers (the wishbone above the hub is what I had to space out).

I just dropped the car down and explained the situation.....
The guys like oh um ah...... we'll do a wheel alignment and have a look at the tyres....
I said for them to ring me if it's going to cost me ANYTHING beforehand.
He reckons its wrong camber setting at the front.......

i'd put my money on the toe being out mag and homo dont know jack all when it comes to cars and i would never let them near my car.

goto a proper Allignment specialist and get it checked after.

the front camber only has very minimal adjustment if any so i dout it will be that.

from memory the front camber isnt adjustable on a GSR, and the geometry doesnt allow big camber anyways, it will be toe i think, had the same problem on my legacy, a fuxktard suspension place put the rear toe out approx 8 deg on each side, i got the alignment sheet and it clearly showed it but i didnt really look at it until my $280! rears were bald after 10k driving, i went back to the place and the guy said "umm we wont be able to find out anything untill some new tyres are on it, i have some good tyres here right now if u want to put them on" i just about punched his face in
