price opinion?

I've been looking at a car locally on a car dealership yard and just wanted to know if you guys thought the pricing was fair?

Its an 1989 AE92 Toyota Corolla FX-GT Sedan 5spd
Its only done 38,000kms
The car is in absolutely immaculate condition, drives beautifully and the kms are genuine ( have been shown all service records, import certificate etc )

He wants $6000 for it, which for the condition its in and the kilometres its done I think is quite reasonably priced.

Opinions?

Rare to get one with that sort of miles.

However ... it is a Corolla, and they tend to hit 300,000km without too many issues. So, unless you really have a desire to have an AE92 that's incredibly mint ... well, you can get more car for the money.

Don't get me wrong, I like my AE92, but given $6,000 to spend I'd be looking at something newer.

so i assume its an ae92 GT.
4 door sedan with 4age etc.

$6k? too much in my opinion..... it may be mint etc, but you can have one for half the price in not much worse conditon. an dhave 3k left to play with!

or for 6k you could look at a later model car. like an ae101 gt if you want 4 doors

Yeah i'm really quite divided

Because the car is so immaculate and the kms are so great along with full service and import history, this would be really ideal for me, along with the added reliability of a Toyota!

But I'm divided by the fact that I know I could spend less money and get something else!

But not sure, I really do like the car and its got great grounds for further modification in the future.

K's are pretty damn low, but as above, still way to expensive in my opinion.
when it comes down to it, its a pretty old car now, and as said you could get one for half that, higher km's but still in good condition and spend the other 3g on the 'grounds for further modification'
Almost getting old enough to be a waste to drive around on those km's...someone buy it and store it for 30 years!

like the others have said, sure K's are low,but you'll hand over the 6K then a bit down the track get bored with the way it is and want to spend $$'s on it for possibly alloy's, tires, audio etc etc and you wont get that back.

You'd be better off finding more car for less $$'s and starting from there

i'd offer him 3k if i had that kind of money to spend, prob end up getting it for under 4k, dealers like to do deals

but then again i'd buy one for 1g and spend 5k on a complete rebuild

He's pretty adamant on the price, but hopefully if I tell him I'm going to pull out of the deal due to the higher price, he might drop it a little.

I don't intend on modifying it much at this stage, probably only a pod + exhaust..

Just out of interest, what other cars does the place deal in. Its not particularly new & lots of yards dont like dealing in older stuff as they dont like risking the warrantie (not that this car sounds like a risk at all however). It just wouldnt be overly surprising (if they deal in newer cars generally) if it was a tradein, in which case, there will be a healthy markup on it (unless he overpaid). There are obvously many dealers with older stuff as well, as its a good market to target, its just as said, newer models can be had for similar prices.

Nope its definitely an import, he showed me all the import papers and service history from japan. He imported in 1995, with 37,000kms on the clock! Its been sitting in his personal garage for the last 10 years and hes had it re-complied about 3 different times to try and sell it, he said it owes him in excess of $10,000 for having it re-complied so many times but he simply could never sell it due to the fact people keep offering him ridiculous prices for it so he never puts it on the yard that often.

But yeah, I'm actually quite keen, just can't get a straight answer out of anyone, I don't care what else I can buy for 6k, is this car worth 6k is more what I'm asking lol.

No not worth it...think of when or if you were selling it would you get that price? no...Itis not worth the price.

Recompliance only cost, what 750 if if nothing needs fixing? So three times that is only $2250 a long way off the $10,000 it was supposed to have cost him to recomply it...

He's pulling ya tit man, IMO i would hunt around for another one, 4age 16v's will happily do 300,000km's with no hassles, so if you find one with 150,000km's for $1500-3k it would be a better option i feel

im positive ive seen them for around 2500 in original condition and 3g if there all ricey

That sounds pretty suspect, sounds like the oldest car dealer trick in the book for getting rid of trade ins. I've heard the old "it was my wife's/my car" many a time from dealers. No one would spend so much getting an old corolla recomplied so many times, it just wouldn't be worth it.

Sounds like a load of BS. You have two years to register the car after it's been complied. Anyone with any knowledge of the system, which most car dealers have, would either register it before the two years were up and put the registration on hold, or only get it complied a second time after they've sold it. Even if they were stupid and recomplied it every two years cost of re-compliance is only about $250 including GST.

He knows he's got you interested and you will pay what he wants if he feeds you enough BS. Because you've shown too much interest you won't get it for a good price but you should be able to offer him a fair price (i.e. no more than $4000) and make sure he knows you will walk if he doesn't agree. You've got to harden up and be prepared to walk away if you can't get it for a fair price. Might even pay to get someone else to buy it for you.

I never said I believed what he said either.

The fact is, the equation works out right for me, sure its overpriced, but oh well, if I overpay, I overpay, at the least I know I'll be paying for quality and something that will last.

Btw, stop bloody telling me what else I can buy, I asked for price opinions on this car, not what else I can do with 6k! Its not that easy when your 19 to walk into your bank and ask for them to loan you money to buy a car privately, this is why I'm doing it through a dealer. Albeit the fact most insurance companys will turn me away anyway.

Sure, I could go buy a car with 180,000kms on the clock for $3000, but whats it going to be worth in 3-5 years time? A grand if I'm lucky? Depreciation is unavoidable, I know if I buy this car it will depreciate, but at least the kms won't clock up in a hurry keeping the depreciation slightly lower.

btw, to the people saying "oh I've seen ones in original condition for 3500" feel free to show me where you found the one with 38,000kms and in immaculate condition? I'd definitely be interested
