ae85 to ae86 fuel lines

Postby panda_dan » Thu Dec 01, 2005 9:12 pm

i am putting a smallport 4age into my 3au ae85. i was wondering if i will have to put in new or ae86 fuel lines or if i may keep the 3au lines. i have heard differing opiinions on this. another consideration is do i need an ae86 fuel tank (they have the bowl in the bottom to help avoid sloshing problems) or will my std ae85 one do? any help much appreciated. got no money for 86 bits! danny.

Youll need to run a line for the feed, about 8mm will be ok, keep your standard line for the return. And to avoid surge best way is to get a surge tank, or the 86 tank which has baffles but it wont be as good as a surge tank.

Finding an AE86 tank may be difficult. You should be able to find a TE71 GT tank, from what I understand is the same.

Otherwise use your existing tank in conjunction with a surge tank with a high pressure pump and a low pressure pump. Mount the surge tank in the boot or something.

It is a good idea to use larger high pressure lines, as the EFI is dealing with 40~50psi as opposed to the 4~5psi of the carby. Having said that I know someone with an AE85 running a 4A-GE with standard tank and fuel lines - just using a VL inline pump and inline EFI fuel filter. Pretty dodgy but it works.

if i get an external fuel pump (i.e. vl commodore etc) and then install a surge tank, will the std carby pump be good enough to feed the surge tank? or option b should i try and mount an in tank pump like a blue top 4age one? cheers danny

You want a low pressure but high flow pump, the intank 4age pump is the exact opposite.

Also the carby pump, is on the side of the engine, so when you take out the 3a, the pumps going with it.
