My gearbox is posessed by a gremlim!

Postby KinLoud » Thu Dec 01, 2005 10:29 pm

The gearbox is coming out in a couple of days due to the following problem.....
I backed my Marino out of the garage. It backed out ok, but when I tried to drive forward down the driveway it wouldn't move... the engine stalled. Hmmmm, restart, move revs, let the clutch out in first, stall, Hmmmm, restart, select reverse, let clutch out and it moves backwards normally. Hmmmm!! There must be a Gremlin jamming the diff like a ratchet!
Background:
Ewan (10k20v) helped me transfer the whole front subframe (subframe, suspension, C52 gearbox and 20v silvertop) from my trueno donor car into my Marino (siezed engine,C50). The donor Trueno had been hit hard in the right rear wheel when parked on the side of the road, everything else was OK.
1 week ago:
Got it running (after minor hassle with fuel pump relay operation). Drove the Marino to the post office and got 3 months rego (rego was on hold). Drove it about 15km it total. During one gearshift from 3rd to 4th it made a loud clunk but otherwise ok so I though nothing of it.
Today:
Finished putting the disks brakes on the rear, sorted the exhaust out (thanks Lee) and replaced a broken stud on a front hub. Then I took it for a test drive to get the rust off the rear disks. I checked that it revved out ok and then did about 10 hard stops from 100kph. On my way back into town I shifted from 3rd to 5th at about 55kph, there was a tiny clunk that sounded like synchros, I thought nothing of it.
Got home, parked in the garage, vacuumed the interior and refitted the rear seats.
Started the Marino and backed out of the garage to go and see Ewan at his work and show him the finished car.
It backed out ok, but when I tried to drive forward down the driveway it wouldn't move... the engine stalled. Hmmmm, restart, move revs, let the clutch out in first, stall, Hmmmm, restart, select reverse, let clutch out and it moves backwards normally. Hmmmm!!
Open garage, get my jack, jack up the rear of the car... wheels turn freely either way.
Jack up front of car, check it is in neutral, turn one wheel forwards, other wheel turns backwards. Turn the wheel backwards, other wheel stays still.
Start engine (front wheels still off the ground), select first let out clutch, engine stalls, restart engine, select reverse, let out clutch, wheels turn backwards. I call Ewan to pick his brains, he can't think what it could be.
I then find that if I turn a wheel backwards enough time the wheel can turn forwards normally. I drop it off the jack and try to drive it into the garage so its out of the way, it oes forwards about 1m then stops. I back it up as far as I can then try to go forwards, it moves so I keep going until its in the garage, ready to be dealt to!

My theory: When the donor trueno got hit it was probably in gear, this has broken something that is now floating around in the gearbox. This broken bit has become jammed between the case and the crown wheel part of the diff. If I go backwards the bit just bumps up over the crown wheel teeth. Going forwards it jams between the crown wheel teeth and the diff housing. I dont really fancy having the whole gearbox lock up on me at 100kph so out it comes! Bugger! Just sold my other C52 last weekend!!.. I will have to get the synchro fixed on my C56 that is sitting around and put that in.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Sounds like you answered you're own question bud.

My last VR4 did similar when i blew the centre diff - it still HAD 4wd, but I could get it OUT of 4wd by freewheeling it to the point where the diff had no teeth. Blew the REAR diff on the line (had no idea the centre was gone too), started the car on axle stands after replacing it, no worries. Put it on the ground, moved it backwards, heard a "crack" and thought nothing of it, must have been something going. Drove round the block, could hear something rattling round in there - got the box off and apart, and its a miracle the lot didnt get totally bound up. Gear teeth EVERYHWERE. Was amusing in RWD though for the 2km I drive it home

Dont tempt fate, get it off and apart. Something "may" have been shocked at some point and somethings bound up.

Hey ken,

Hmm.. I guess you might be regretting selling that spare c52 to me the other week

Hope you get it sorted man.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

Punter - yeah, murphy's law. "Hmmm, I'll never need this gearbox again, I think I will sell it"
Bugger. No problems... I really did want a C56 in it eventually anyway.
Let me know when you need the info about the AFM and the fuel pump relay wiring.
Adrian - I'll talk to you about parts etc. from your gearboxes. Thanks

I had my car do this and it was jammed in a forward gear and reverse at the same time, Thats why it stalls.

not sure how much i want, it had been rebuilt b4 (new syncros)
But the diff seams to be screwed.... left shaft is very wobly, making the oil seal leak, I have a spare diff that can be put into it that should fix it up.
pm me a offer?
