I know a good car broker who will value it at what I bought it.

Ask yourself how much the low mileage is worth to you.
Sure its 38k's now, but two years down the track you will be close to or past 100k's. So realistically that sort of mileage is only good if you intend not to drive it as it will lose value faster than a cheaper higher mileage car.

The fact is, the equation works out right for me, sure its overpriced, but oh well, if I overpay, I overpay, at the least I know I'll be paying for quality and something that will last.

Btw, stop bloody telling me what else I can buy, I asked for price opinions on this car, not what else I can do with 6k! Its not that easy when your 19 to walk into your bank and ask for them to loan you money to buy a car privately, this is why I'm doing it through a dealer. Albeit the fact most insurance companys will turn me away anyway.

Sure, I could go buy a car with 180,000kms on the clock for $3000, but whats it going to be worth in 3-5 years time? A grand if I'm lucky? Depreciation is unavoidable, I know if I buy this car it will depreciate, but at least the kms won't clock up in a hurry keeping the depreciation slightly lower.

btw, to the people saying "oh I've seen ones in original condition for 3500" feel free to show me where you found the one with 38,000kms and in immaculate condition? I'd definitely be interested :)

ok mate
you came on here asking if its overpriced......
some of us think its is
youve now come back basically saying i dont care what you all say i dont mind overpaying
the mind boggles dosent it

lets put it another way
its taken the dea;er how many years to sell this car at this price ??
on a car yard ??
with advertising??

and you expect to get how much for it ? when you sell it ??
and take how long to sell it ??

you see cars value dosent work on km's or condidtion
it works on peoples desire

if you dont desire that car its worthless to you
if you do then youll pay any money for it

oh and for the guy i know with one...
he wants some mags for his hilux in exchange for it
so prolly 1800 bucks worth i guess

meh waste of time

No offence intended, but it does sound like you have made your mind up prior to asking for opinions anyway.
all in all, although I dont think its worth the $$, it should be a nice reliable car & probably one of the best examples around, so if you get it, enjoy it! :)

When it comes to selling, you will NEED to sell to an enthusiast who is really looking for one like it as both general public and car dealers wont even get close to that type of cash. This isnt anything unusual however- much like the ae86's- although lots of people on here value them at high money, to a common person in the public they are just old 80's toyotas not worth much.

Sounds like you have done some footwork for the insurance with a broker who will value it at your cost, as long as the contract all works out that sounds good.

Another thing you should do is still get it all checked over by a private assessor. Just because something is low mileage, it does not always mean it is 'as new'. the problem is, its been sitting for long periods of time, things corode up, get stiff etc. Its unlikely, but worth the hundie or so just to get all the compresson etc checked.

again, out of interest, is this a first car?

Just for the record Cakky didn't say that the dealer spent $10,000 re-complying the car. He said the car owed the dealer over $10,000.

In 1995 he would have paid about 300,000 yen for that car. Plus an agents fee of 80,000 (average) At an exchange rate of about 65 yen = $1 that's $5846. Add the shipping cost and the $1500 Custom duty we paid back then and you have about $8800. With GST included we're at $9900 with compliancing & registration costs still to add.

The question is why has the dealer kept the car for 10 years. Most of us have a stock turn around policy of 90 to 120 days. Ourselves, we'd start culling them out if they sat for much more than a month without some real interest being shown.
This car would have been a reasonably popular seller at around 12 ~ 13K in 1995.

There are some dealers who just sit on their stock regardless of age, often because of the arrangements they have with whoever is financing them.
But these days, they're rare.

I hate to say it but it's more likely that the car has been driven by a family member and the displayed mileage doesn't reflect that.
A Japanese import with so few kilometres on the clock should look and drive pretty much as new.
If you don't get that 'almost new' car sensation when you take it for a test drive I'd be suspicious of the mileage.

If you do, and the mileage is in fact genuine a 6K price tag is not out of the question. Most dealers wouldn't buy it for stock today but if we traded it in we'd probably hang that price on it for an ask.

As others have mentioned, realising anything like your money back on resale will be difficult.
Also, you'd want to take care of some servicing items immediately. Particularly changing the cambelt.

I think that he's bought it, and also that he's Wellington based (or at least the car dealer is). I for one will be very interested to see it, since it's the same as my competition car :) - albeit, much less broken.

Thanks TRD Man for clearing that up.

The car really does have a genuinely "new" feel to it. As soon as you get in the car and sit in the seats and a have a look at the absolutely spotless interior you can see how it has the km's it does.

The car drives fine, no jumping at any revs, it revs right through smoothly with no problems. Driving it, the gearbox is fine, smooth and the ride is quiet and comfortable with no clattering or banging when driving.

For the record, the car dealer has a storage shed with over 100 cars in it, he pulls out a few every now and then to sell them, obviously no one has bitten when he's previously pulled it out.

Hope to be able to join in on a few toyspeed events once I get the car :)

Im real suspect of this aye.

My starlet felt like a new car when I bought it, it was quiet real clean and nice but its done 208555kms.

And now it doesn't sound new either, its dirty, loud and crap.

Same thing applies to my Trueno, it seems new but its done 150000kms

Thank God at least one person on these forums knows what hes talking about, thanks TRDMan, and who makes sense.

Cakky didn`t mention that his father (me) knows the dealer well, and that he does have over 100 cars, all interesting, in long term storage, 2 or 3 at a time that get taken out and put in his yard when he feels like it, or needs more room for something else more interesting.

The 3 this time were an M3, one of only 6 4 doors in the country; and one of 4 he has in storage, an immaculate AC Schnitzer 528i convertible, and this genuine low miles immaculate Toyota.

Everyone who has seen it has been gobsmacked by its condition, and those who know, obviously not most of you lot, have agreed that the price is not unrealistic.

You will soon see for yourselves if you are in Wellington.

You may then decide to open your other eye ....

Wait, they made an M3 four door in what generation? I have never heard of such a thing! Heh, now that'd be a cool semi sleeper.

I think another factor people are not taking in is the price difference between a dealer and private sale.
One of my mates who is in the trade whom I ran this by said IF he could find a dealer who was interested, it would still be a ~$5000 retail car, however, to buy it, he would be looking at quite a bit less...which is probably why I have a skewed perception of value (I can always get much cheaper usually)- I wouldnt buy it for that, but the general dealer market would put around that price on and sell for that. My opinion is biased as I dont purchase from the dealer.
Also, as TRD man says, back in 95, this was still a $12ish+ G car on a yard- dads 91 corolla se was about 10g 8 years ago, and thats the same shape (with 40k's).
However, as a dealer, he would also have been able to devalue it over the years also, so it would not owe 10G anymore. Its common practice to devalue the cars at tax time if they have been in stock for ages. Im guessing he must do something like that to afford to have 100 cars in storage.

Can agree with those that show knowledge such as yourself.

Can`t agree with those whose sole advice is `save money and buy a flogged out thrashed for the last 15 years heap of shyte', which is pointless.

I also tend to be a bit provocative by nature, sorry !!!

Out of interest, whats a s/c AW11 ???

As for the 4 door M3, 1995, in Dakar yellow, which was the only colour you could buy them in back then, a good clue for all the fake M cars out there ...

Cheers MIke

What i dont get is why a dealer would store a hundred cars over a long period of time. Surely that terriable business pracitice purely based on storage costs and the time value of money
