dry sump bell housing

Postby Skidman » Tue Dec 06, 2005 7:39 pm

Ok, my boss has a 550hp lexus V8 we are going to dry sump it and put the oil resivior in the bell housing with a cooler etc, etc. (like the V8 supercars) im not actually sure what box its bolting up to, but

Dose anybody pre make these? or is it gonna have to be another one of those engeneering feats?
Also the only thing holding back the Hp at the moment is the silver top quad throttle bodies- he wants to get black top ones apparently they are 2mm bigger? is there another way of letting the mass of air in that anybody can suggest. Remember that its a race car so reliability is important- and money less important.
Ideas would be appreciated.

Running the dry sump tank in the bellhousing isn't the greatest idea. Super Tourer's did it & I've seen many a super tourer bmw tank with a lot of patches on it from broken clutches/input shafts etc. I'd run it either inside the car or in the boot. yes you'll have longer lines but it'll be easier to check the oil level & clean the tank out this way. This is the way we do the majority of our setups, occasionally we run the tank in the engine bay on smaller engines. Formula ford's run the tank in the bellhousing & you can never get them clean(well not without turning the bellhousing upside down for starters) Only real advantage with running one in the bellhousing is you gain space & get the weight down low & possible minimise hose lengths, but the disadvantages I'm sure outweigh these. As for putting it in the bellhousing you'll need to add mounts to an existing bellhousing or make a new one & the tank will most definately be custom made. Do it in the car/boot & you can use a Petersen or similar style tank which come in all sorts of diameter's & heights or if need be you can custom make one if you know what you're doing for not a lot more.

As for getting more air into the engine, why not ditch the 20v t.b's??? You could either run 4 x IDA or DCOE style throttle bodies which you can get off the shelf in up to 65mm sizes or else we've got numerous 500hp+ holden's & chevy's running a single 4barrel style throttlebody which flow around 1000cfm or more depending on size & bolt onto the majority of existing 4barrel manifolds. Else you could try & adapt a Motec or similar V8supercar induction but I think you'll find the cost is pretty prohibitive especially if yu buy the carbon fibre trumpets & stuff. Hope this helps a lil.

you may find that toyota has packaged the bellhosing pretty tight, (assuming that it has a factory box) also, servicing could be an issue as to providing adequate access.

well, you learn something everyday.....

id have thought youd be kind of limited to volume in a conventanal bellhousing

Yea, as i thought. He has run a targra car with it before and swears by it, lower center of gravity and weight more centrilised etc.
I did try and talk him out of it but didnt really have the experience to do so. lol. So it looks like we might be doing the mean custom fabrication.!! FUN!
Tight packaging and sevricing is not an issue blitza, but thanks for the concern.
As for the throttle bodies, we run 2 sets of silvertop throttle bodies, one for each bank, But the IDA's may be worth a look. The only problem with going to big is that we will loose torque, and dont want the hassle of trying every size to maximise KW, and NM.
Thanks for the ideas tho.
