downside to LSD?

Postby barryogen » Wed Dec 07, 2005 4:01 pm

is there a downside to changing from non-lsd to lsd for a FF car?

the reason for the change is to limit/some_what_remove "single wheel" spin on gravel/wet/grass.

about the only downside I can see is the cost($1200 + the install) and potentially a bit more tyre wear(although it'd probably be about even due to current wheel spin.)

It depends on what kind of LSD really...

What exactly are you looking at?

torsen = fine.

viscous = fine.

clutch pack = could be a PITA, depending on how it is set up.

Dave, the mechanical LSD will make some noise, it will feel harsh at times and it may induce some extra understeer.
Apart from that there's no real downside.

But I would ask - how often do you drive on gravel or wet grass?

I've just installed a TRD mech LSD (1.5way) in my Ae82 and i have to say, the current benifits outweigh the disadvantages.

Im suprised how smooth and not noisy it is. Diff is in a C52 gearbox with 75w-90 syntrax gearbox oil. It's a bit noisy when turning really tight.. but for general driving its fine

I guess only time will tell the true benifits and disadvantages

I live on an almst dirt road, and I park on wet grass... my problem is that single wheel spin is a problem now on wet tarseal/asphelt(sp?), and with a few mods I'm planning, it'll be putting a fair bit more power to the wheels, so I want to limit single wheel spinning before it becomes annoying.

and yes I realise that slipping the clutch would limit it, but errr, thats not the point.

I found underseer a bit of a problem in due to the LSD on my Familia. If you give a bit too much gas on a corner and both wheels light up, you can get in a little trouble (the corolla however, 1 wheel spins, 1 wheel guides).

Apart from that they are brilliant! Help reduce torque steer too. I miss my LSD.
