Aftercooler info

Postby Ae92typeX » Sun Dec 11, 2005 12:48 am

who can tell me a bit about aftercoolers?
To be honnest I only just heard of them the other day watching 10 greatest diggers or something :roll: when it mentioned having an aftercooled engine.

'Aftercooler
The aftercooler cools the compressed air from the pump before it enters the receiver. The heat from the compressed air is transferred outward to the aluminum fins of the aftercooler, the flywheel/fan creates an air flow that rushes past and cools the aluminum fins.'

I gather they have a waterpump (or at least the ones I found info on), but how is this different to an w/a intercooler?

Possible explanation:
Sometimes you will hear intercooler defined as cooling the air between supercharger stages (usually found in WW2 piston fighter aircraft i.e. P38 Lightning).
With the above definition in mind, aftercooler means cooling the air between the turbo/supercharger and the engine intake.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

ah, yes, as you say;

'An intercooler is a device used on turbocharged and supercharged internal combustion engines to improve the volumetric efficiency and increase the amount of charge in the engine, thereby increasing power. The inter in the name refers to its location compared to the compressors; the coolers were typically installed between multiple stages of supercharging in aircraft engines. Modern automobile designs are technically aftercoolers because they appear at the very end of the chain, but this name is no longer used.' (reference.com)

so as far as vehicle engines are concerned, were looking at a simple terminology difference then aftercooler/intercooler...
nothing exciting or new to learn about :(

aftercoolers on a diesel engine.
same as a water to air cooler
but they use the engines cooling system as the cooling medium. no seperate water supply.
