Echo: Need a bit more power, but within warranty

Postby adamkerrnz » Sun Dec 11, 2005 10:20 pm

Hey guys,

I just got a 2003 Toyota echo with a 1.3l VVT-i engine.
Stock, its aparently 69kw, about 92hp. i want to push this to about 100hp, even a little more. but i want to do it fairly cheaply and it needs to be within the signature class warranty.

any advice is appreciated,
Cheers,
Adam

What are the limitations of the warranty? K&N panel filter is probably the only thing you could do without them getting shitty.
I'm sure you could rig up a nitrous kit somehow...
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

Yeah, i was thinking of getting a filter done, i will have to talk to toyota about their warranty conditions, and i think toyota signature class mechanics would have to install it :( i would rather do it myself, but those are the rules sadly

K&N panel replacement will not do much diffrence as OEM filters are adequate. same goes for exhaust.

TRD do a SC kit for the echo from memory... could be good for a laugh, although I'd imagine that the warranty would go out the window.

Have a look through here... http://trdparts.jp/english/list_new-vitz.html and here...

could make a fun little vehicle.

From my post....

First link...
wheels?, muffler, suspension kit, LSD, and final gear set would probably not be ok under the warranty... the rest would either go un-noticed, or be fine.

Second Link...
Again the same stuff from above, and potentially anything visible(except wheels?) will probably void it.

you should ring toyota nz or email them (http://www.toyota.co.nz/Contact/MnV2bUa ... etFUNomM/2) and ask them personally?

There arew quite a few parts for the echo. They are popular in japan and get raced quite a bit . They are called the toyota vitz over there so just search for some bolt on bits . Then if something breaks take it off!!

I know theres one in the country with a HKS turbo kit installed 8)

How under cover is that!

adamkernnz, there's the usual range of TRD gear available for Echo/Vitz.
Air filter, oil filter, thermostat, suspension, turret braces, clutch, LSD, Quickshifter, extractor set, exhaust etc ...

There's not a lot in terms of internal engine parts but I do know of a couple of 1300 Echo powered rally cars that really go well so there are obviously some tricks that can be done.
The TRD turbo kit is for the 1500 version.

Both the Netz Cup race series and the TRD Vitz Rally Challenge used the 1000cc version with internally standard engines.

I'm sure a set of silvertop ITBs, a pair of mild cams, a TRD extractor and a LINK Plus would do wonders.
What was that you were saying about the warranty?

Electric supercharger.
And,
Yes, I'm serious :)
They are quite expensive though.
Otherwise you could just take everything out of the car and make it lighter (to give it a similar power to weight ratio).

Maybe you should just bite the bullet and go for it though, who needs a warranty? If you take it someplace reputable they will look after you for parts and labour for a few months at least and things of a hipo nature will usually go sooner rather than later.

So get a turbo manifold made up, an ecu and turbo then go pull a 14.

(or a t least go out in a flaming mess)

as far as the warranty goes....
if its a toyota approved part (TRD) fitted by an approved workshop (toyota) then you are still covered. however the TRD warranty applies to the TRD parts, and some off road parts may not be covered and may void the signature class warranty.
if you for example fit your own CAI with an aftermarket filter and the rings wear out prematurly you may not be covered, how ever if you fit one and the fuel pump fails then you wil be fine as there is no way the air intake can affect the fuel pump.

now whats is your budget? to be honest getting those gains from the average "small budget" will not be easy however everyones version of small differs....

semi random question ... what's different in an Echo / Vitz RS?

I have seen several Echo 5 doors badged as an RS model driving around Wellington. I really like silly little cars (thus why I have had 5 minis), and am wondering if there are interesting enough Echo's around to potentially turn one into a cheap little club car in a couple of years time.

I've had a standard Echo completely crossed up, and found them a surprisingly nimble car on loose surfaces.

i think the main performance gains are lighter weight (not 100% on that) and suspension tuning.
the engines are identical, including the ecu
but i havnt checked to see if the gearboxs are different at all.

Hey, thanks for the information :D

i just got a booklet explaining what is covered under warranty today. "shock absorbers", exhaust and "electrical wiring harnesses" are not covered by the warranty and can therefore be modified i take it. The engine management components are under warranty, which kinda rules out an ECU change. funnily enough, shock absorbers are not covered but "suspension" is. The clutch and gearbox are under warranty too. I can easily do an air filter change, thats about it for now as i can not afford an exhaust system :x

i can change the wheels, and do other visual stuff like tinting, i can also change out my audio system which is good. I dont think any lightening can be done as it will only be made heavier with my audio gear

Funny thing is, you got a warrenty on a toyota!

how many toyotas u know of that break as soon as they leave the showroom.... or for another 300,000km's easily hahahah.

Cant have your cake and eat it too, maybe save a penny or two, until when the warrenty runs out, and swap a 2zz-ge in, then get a powerfc and such :D make it a VERY different little echo lol.

My mums Carib's Air Bag controller crapped out after 50,000 kms. And it was gonna cost $1500 to get a new one or something. But she picked one up for $400
