Where to buy Colortune plugs in nz?

Postby Ae92typeX » Sat Dec 03, 2005 12:31 am

Does anyone know where to get some colortune plugs in nz?
My uncle had a set years ago and they were pretty useful, but he does not have them anymore.

for those not knowing what I am on about:

'What is the Colortune?
The Colortune is a sparkplug that takes the guesswork out of setting mixture screws, and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than an EGA. The theory behind the Colortune is quite simple. Mixtures with differing fuel/air ratios will burn with different colors. You already know this, if you've ever adjusted a gas burner, Bunsen burner, welding torch, whatever. Rich mixtures burn yellow or orange, whereas mixtures with the correct fuel/air ratio will burn a bright blue. Wouldn't it be nice if you could peek inside the combustion chamber of a running engine to look at the flame color as you tweak the mixture screws? With the Colortune, you can. The Colortune is a sparkplug with a transparent window that lets you observe the flame color in a running engine. The basic operation is quite simple. With the engine running, turn the mixture screw out until you obtain a yellow flame (rich). Then, turn the mixture screw in until the flame just turns blue. This is the correct mixture screw setting for best performance. Obviously, this is repeated for all cylinders'. (http://www.morrowmarsh.ca/concours/tech ... ortune.htm)

:o I have a set of them! 8)
yeah they are great.... i tune a scooter and a lawn mower with it..
as they only have 1 spark plug which is alot easy to tune...
tyr it on a Mini engine, damn, is so hard... as the mini got twin SU carbs which makes things harder...

by the way, here is the address on the instruction manual... hope it helps

Gunson's Colourplugs LTD.
66 Royal Mint Street, London, E.I.

also just did a search on the net.. see like http://www.gunson.co.uk/ is their website??

Last thing I tuned with them was my mighty allegro.
To be honnest, with the mini engines I think its better to follow vizzards instructions. But if things are a little different than standard/not using a SU, they could be handy.
Cheers for the link NA Drifter- I hadnt seen that one. cant see prices on that one unfortunatly, nice of them to have a pdf manual for me to read however :)
If you do see them and prices ollieboy, post it back up here.
Online they tend to cost ~ $60-$100NZD depending on version & not including postage.
Im not really in dire need however, just would like it as an addition to my tools. Might just keep looking on trademe every now and then
Cheers

an ol' school V8 parts supplier could be the go, or get in touch with a few of the old boys, as they would be the most likely to have these available to them.
I've been a bad bad boy. I should read the rules and behave before I get spanked by an admin

Oh, also the guy said that the people who used to import them (Syme Co. I think he said) no longer import them so you will probably have to get them from England.

I will talk to my Uncle, he lives in England and I will see if he has seen them round or if he can go have a look for them.

Try Burton's or QED in England they had them last time I checked & will probably be as cheap as anywhere else. Last set my old man got years ago came from Symes(sp?) but that was ages ago, but he said try burtons as well.
