Heh, didn't take the head off. Take the glow plugs out and crank it over, watch the pretty fountains of water, chuck them back in and eventually get it to fire up. Got a couple fo litres of water out the exhaust, what a mess that was

Unless you're of the rotary persuasion then I'm not entirely sure what you're meaning

No idea of the model number off hand.

Side valve, 4 cylinder, Ford motor.

what model ford is it?
all the old sidevalve fords Ive seen still have a chain drive for the cam (its short as the cam is just up to the side of the crank, but there none the less), even old 1950's ones like the e83w- which didnt even have waterpumps!
Cant believe im still a member here.

This particular one - is a Prefect, and uses gears.......

cool, but strange. assuming its an early 50's version (as in the one you posted a while ago), they used the same 1172cc sidevalve as all others of the period- like the e83.
heres a link to a guys rebuild, which clearly shows the chain setup:

http://www.e83w.co.uk/restoration/engine.htm

not saying you are incorrect, just pointing out its a bit weird.

How old are we talking? All the VN-ish ones were chain driven, sounded kinda... industrial.

oh well, car is back up and running now :D
thanks to my good mate who is a mechanic, got all the parts the next day and came to my house in the evening.
he was saying that most of the toyotas they have seen in which the cambelt has broken, there has normally no damage (or minimal) to valves, pistons and all the other associated parts.
Good ol toyotas eh, they just wont be beat.
FYI the cambelt had only done around 40 thousand ks, which is not a whole heap.

The one I posted a while back I don't think is geared. I'd have to check on that bu t from memory his is the first of the chains.
