oil cooler q's

Postby BBBrad » Sat Dec 31, 2005 9:20 am

I have in my little hands a nice big thermostat controlled oil cooler. My question is , because its so big (1 liter+) will I have any problems with oil starvation on startup due to oil draining away from it when its been sitting for a while? Also another possible problem when it comes to oil change time, and only been able to change 80% of the dirty oil,(oil still left in oil cooler?).
Basically, does the 3s hold its oil? I would like to mount the oil cooler slightly higher than the engine (possibly makes a difference).
Thanks in advance.

Just mount the cooler so it doesn't drain back, ie the connections on top.

For oil changes you could remove the cooler from the car and drain it.

I think I have very similar thing to what u have got.
I got a RX7 FC3S oil cooler in my AE86. I install it with a remote oil filter kit.
Is about 1 liter too and got termostat in it. During start up, yeah, about 1 or 2 sec after engine start up, there will be no oil pressure. That only happen when the car have not been started over night or longer. If on the same day, it is not an issue.

During oil change, there is 2 different ways (my way) to get the "extra" oil out by,
1, unbolt the termostart on the oil cooler since it is right at the bottom and drain it from there.
2, use air compressor or foot pump and blow air to the hole of the oil filter mount in the remote oil filter kit after the oil filter been removed.

if ur oil cooler is on a theromostat wouldnt you loose oil pressure like 5mins into the drive when the oil warms up enough to open the thermostat?, not at start up, or do oil cooler thermostats work the same as radiatior thermostats?

The idea of thermostat in oil cooler is to bypass the cooler when it is cold.
