4AGE conversion problem with distributor

Postby sr coupe » Sun Jan 01, 2006 9:00 am

got a problem and hope someone can help me as I'm getting down and desperate! Have rebuilt an 86 4AGE and dispensed with the computer, electronic ignition and fuel injection in favour of 40mm dellorto's and good old fashioned distributor. Engine was originally front wheel drive and have fitted it to a 78 sr coupe (one owner - bare metal resto) rear wheel drive. Engine fires up brilliant but appears to retard the spark when under acceleration causing backfire. I'm told the dizzy is spinning the wrong way. Would this sound correct and what can I do to get this sorted? I've been stranded for a week and am starting to turn into a cabbage. Really appreciate some gangster giving us the low-down on how to climb outta this hole! Cher bro! :

what is the dizzy off?, have you had the ignition curve tested (or adjusted) to see how similar it is to a 4age one?
Its going to be spinning in the correct direction (it does not have a choice), but whether the dizzy is suitable for the conversion may be the question.
Cant believe im still a member here.

i put an injected 4age bluetop into my ke35 and had a similar problem, when I put my foot down the timing would go the wrong way (retard instead of advancing or vice versa, not sure).

turned out I had two wires on the dizzy round the wrong way...

GETTING DIZZY

Postby SKDTOY » Tue Jan 03, 2006 11:31 pm

HEY GUESS WHAT, ME TOO.

Hey guys ive been their with the same problem .I chucked a blue top in my AE85 and Tried to be clevier and used the 3AU Dizzy then the fun began.
It would start a treat but give it a ring and would run sluggish and back fire.
I was running cams so advanced the timing to get it to idle but had to get a larger battery to crank it at start.
Coz of the fact that when it started the dizzy would go to advance machanicaly but in reality was retarding the timing and the higher the RPM rised the timing progessivly retarded reducing the power and increasing the back fire issue .

This had me stuffed for a bit because I was told that the 3AU would work
DIRTY LIAR!

I thought about it for a bit and sussed it out .Gutted the dizzy and modded it to advance in the other direction, not fun .
I would'nt recomend it.
I binned it coz the ignition curve was all bundy.

So now im using a 4K Dizzy,It advances in the right direction.
It requires some fabrication /modification but is the real deal.
Ive used a points type its good for 8K but the electronic version would be better.I now know of two guys rallying the same set up through friends.

The ignition curve is good so ive been told
I can help with the fabrication measurments if ya want them give me a heads up at.

There is a nother solution- you can run the original 4age distributor but you need to run some thing called a Hyper pak- little magic black box that converts the ign signals.
there were a few on trademe a while ago- unsure who makes em unfortunatley.
Check with Fraser Cars in Beach Haven theyll know the low down
