wiring loom???

Postby rwd_mayhem » Tue Jan 03, 2006 11:07 pm

ok ive managed to fry all the wires tht go to my indicators(in a mk2 escort), at first i just replaced the fuse and didnt touch the wires and the indicators started working again so i thought i better tape up all the wires so they dont touch the body etc (all the plastic tht was round the wires have been fried) but after i did tht the indicators stopped working again. (also the brake lights dont work coz they share the same fuse) and also now it wont start, the starter motor doesnt even try to kick over im hoping thts just wires too.

now im wondering how hard would it be to replace these wires? could i get a escort wiring loom and just replace the whole thing? or how much would it cost to get a autoelectrician to fix it?

I once put + on the - and - on the + and fully $&#$% up the electrical system in a MG metro...

I got it replaced, somehow found the loom again, it was crazy to find it all but it doesn't turn out too expensive...

Auto electricians are bloody expensive and the last one that came by spent quarter of an hour talking on the phone, real slack guy

Oh nah he just came to check on this bluebird we had and was really expensive in only checking, he found out there was low compression on the cylinders, that cost us 80 dollars for him to tell my friend that. I suggest you wont find one for the escort nowadays, it'd be way too rare.

check all the wires and check which ones are burntand get them replaced, when they burn they melt together and that can cause chaos as circuits can combine, your starter motor is probably screwed too.

its probably the wiring to the starter solenoid, not the actual starter.

As Darkmyst suggests I'd just unplug all the loom, fully unwrap it and replace any wires that look remotely bad. Then check relays, solenoilds, as well as things like the actual indicator stalk- if you are unlucky, that may also have been damaged/melted in the short.
You still see the odd escort being wrecked at wreckers up here and on trademe, so if it came to that, its still another option. In saying that, its also not to hard (just time consuming)to make a whole new loom for the older cars- they have bugger all wires compared to a new japper...Ive done it before for one of my old minis and another old ford.
Cant believe im still a member here.

it wouldn't be that hard to replace the whole loom with another one off the same car, but you need to know what caused the problem so it won't happen to your new loom!
