The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you're willing to work.

Get it checked by a proper mechanic who you trust, and who has worked on one of these cars before.

Otherwise, at LEAST get a compression test done. I didn't get it done on a GT Four I bought a while back, and 6 months later the engine died, ended up costing me a LOT of money to get it sorted. The rear diff mounts are a common failure point on ST185s, so get them checked too.

Otherwise, just the usuals ... check if its blowing smoke, check for a "milky" coloured substance just inside the radiator cap (indicates possible blown headgasket), listen for any rattling, listen for knocking from CVs, check tyre wear to see if wheel alignment is ok etc etc. Also watch out for the synchro's in 2nd gear.

$5000 is ok for a good condition 185 with those km's, but its hard to find one in good condition :)

IMO $5000 is a bit much, on trademe there are quite a few cheapies coming up all the time.

Probably some of the more important things I'd look for are -
Regular servicing, with good oil, and the oil in there shouldn't be all black or anything. Bearings like to go on these engines if the oil isn't topped up and clean.

Clutch - if this needs doing, it's a PITA job, or expensive if you pay someone. If it has just been done then that's a good plus for the car

Check for signs of repairs on the rear 1/4 panels and stuff. When these cars were new they were worth a lot, subsequently they have often been repaired after major crashes, rather than written off as cheaper cars would be. If the repairs haven't been done properly you can have a car that's impossible to properly align the wheels and chews through tyres

Those are the main things. They're also known to go through wheel bearings so listen for humming noises that increase with speed, or creaking on low speed turns.
