TE71 rolla coughing and spluttering

Postby fuel » Thu Jan 05, 2006 11:44 am

My '82 TE71 Corolla isn't running right. I took it for a drive after not driving it for a few weeks, and about after 30 mins of driving it just starts to run like crap. It will cough and splutter and hesitate under light to half throttle, yet when you boot it on full throttle it's fine. It seemed to idle fine initially, but then the idle got worse after this happened.

I checked the plugs, leads, coil and dizzy and all seem to be ok. I think it's fuel related. Fuel filter is full of fuel, and seems to be in good order.

It's the 2T-B 1600cc pushrod twin carb motor.

Any ideas?

Cheers

my mate had the same problem, but his was a 2tge with monstor carbs that turned out to be jetted for a 18rg..

His problem was blown head gasket, im guessing there was just to much happening in the combustion chamber but when he put his foot down the extra gas jjust seemed to clear everything out...

Anywho try fuel filter, cleaning the carbs etc ive found fuel filters cant always be trusted to be checked by eye its only like $3 mayaswell replace it.

And if that doesnt work check fuel preasures and go from there i spose.

Fuel sounds like an issue to me too. In our old Daihatsu we got a blockage in one of he lines and it did a very similar thing. Check the air side of things though as well. If its been sitting for a while something might have gotten in there!

It was only sitting a couple weeks while I way away on holiday. It ran mint for like half an hour at least before it happened.. I must admit I was thrashing it a bit... in a paddock

while running you can see the fuel in the carby bowls, sits on half the level always. fuel filter is full of fuel and you can see it flowing well. I checked the points, and dizzy cap/rotor again - they look in alright condition. It doesn't feel like a spark mis fire, it feels like a lean/lack of fuel issue.

It sorta suggests it's one of the main jets which is blocked or partially blocked, seeing as it revs out fine under full throttle (ie, when secondaries kick in).

Is there any way to clean out the jets without dismantling the carbs? I've done it to my Mitsi aisan carb, but will try and avoid doing it to the twin carbs on this beast - too complex for me.

Sorted guys, thanks.

It seems it was one of the main jets blocked or partially blocked. I disconnected the fuel pump and sprayed carby cleaner into the fuel bowls with fuel and let sit for a bit, then ran it at fast-idle for a few minutes. Seems to have done the trick.

I thoroughly recommend Nulon throttle body and carby cleaner, $12 from Super Cheap.
