How much for a bumper?

Postby fuel » Thu Jan 05, 2006 9:20 pm

I recently had a little accident sending my Galant into the rear of a Corona.

It was a mid 90s NZ-new Corona GSX Liftback, looked like this but red:

How much would one of these rear bumpers (including frame) likely go for at a wreckers? Is the sedan bumper interchangable with the liftback?

Also does anyone know of a good priced panel beater around the Browns bay area?

Cheers,
Phil

I have a general idea, between $100 and $200 for the bumper itself depending where I go. But there's places like Pick-A-Part which have bumpers from as little as $28.

Basically I've been quoted over $900 to fix their car - it seems $600 of that alone is repairing and repainting the bumper - surely I could just get another bumper and get it repainted for less than that.

So I'm basically wanting to know if the sedan bumper fits the liftback, and if anyone knows a good panel beater in Browns Bay who isn't likely to charge an arm and a leg.

To give an indication, I know a guy who is a panelbeater and they had to replace the bumper on a 91 Ford Festiva. Cost $800 for the bumper and then they had to paint it. 8O Told him he could of paid $200 extra and bought my whole car.
Just remeber though, alot of that $600 will be paint and prep, unless you can get a good condition one the right colour then it will be pricey.

I've been quoted around the $100 mark to get my bumper resprayed on my car - this was from several places. It seems all places in the city charge alot more than small towns.

I just fail to see how they want over $900 to fix something so minor.

This sucks

its quite a bit of work to properly repair and prep a damaged bumper, especially if it has any tears which need plastic welding or stretches which need sorting. As you are doing however, the best is to look for a second hand bumper and get it painted. Aside from places like pick a part, which will cost next to nothing if they have your model in, I think your estimate of 1-2hundie (or to mid 350ish) from other wreckers is about right.

Yep thanks for that.

So now I'm just wondering if the sedan bumper fits the liftback.

The Corona I hit was NZ-new, and had like a black painted bubble thing on the end of the bumper - none of the imports I see so far have it - looks like the existing bumper will have to be repaired

Ouch!

My car looks like this -

And my car came out worse off! The Corona had a crack in the corner of the bumper, and was pushed in a little bit. I also dented the little panel above the bumper too.

I guess I better start saving.. or whoring myself out or something.. must get $1000 together.

where that damage is, is beyond me. Tried fighting it, but it only got lowered a couple of hundy. They replaced the bumper with an OEM replacement! That panel beater is well known for ripping people off already.

Holy crap. The corona I hit was similar, but the bumper was cracked in the corner, and pushed in a little more. I also dented the metal panel just between the tail light and the bumper and dented the corner of the bootlid.

The owner rang me with another quote of $1150+. So it looks like $967 is going to be the cheapest :(

When did you do that Donna? In what car? And which rip off panel beater repaired it?

Phil, the sedan & liftback bumpers are different, liftback has the moulding for the number plate built in to it, while the sedan is flat across the back, as below (96 NZ Corona)

Hrmm. This one had the number plate on the bootlid I'm sure. All the Corona sedans I saw at the wreckers had the number plate in the bumper.

Although this Corona was a NZ-new GSX Liftback, which has the same raised sticky out bit as your NZ-new sedan, which the jap imports don't seem to have.
