Hilux indicator problem

Postby TruenoBoy » Fri Jan 06, 2006 11:30 pm

My indicators are currently no go, vehicle is 98 Hilux. NZ new

There is just no responce from switching the stalk. All bulbs are fine aswell as the dash bulbs as the hazzards still work. It was an intermitant problem for a couple of months before this and sometimes I used to be able to get them to go by switching them either left or right then flicking the hazzards on then off. then it would pick up the left or right arrow.

I first thought it may be the contacts that were a bit dirty so I got to them and ran a bit of emory tape over them to clean them up. Still no go, after flicking hazzards on and off I sometimes get a fast flicker from the relay by the fuses, Which sort of sounds like a sticky contact or something like that (This relay normaly clicks on off with the indicators beat). So maybe a dodgy relay? wouldnt this affect the hazzards though?

From my best efforts of trying to put this problem into words, does anybody have any ideas on what it could be? or any help on testing the relay or indicators?

If not Ill be off to the auto sparkies next week :?

It could be heaps of things really. In my trueno the wire from the hazard lights to the indicator was damaged and it worked intermittently then one day stopped when the connection permanently came apart. So maybe try that with a test light and see if it has a current, if it does then its not that. I dont know anything about relays and stuff so I can't say.

i would imagine it easyer to just go right to a sparky on this one, otherwise i imagine youd be spending hours chasing somthing you may not even reconise as been broken.

if it uses a seperate flasher unit than the hazards than that could be faulty. Most cars tend to use the same unit however... As Adydas says, you may end up spending a bit of time doing it, but If I was going to, and didnt have any idea what the problem was, I'd start at the stalk with my multimeter, and test through from there. (what better to do on a sunny day)

problem resolved

must of been a loose conection behind the hazzard switch that follows onto the stalk. Was testing these wires with multimeter and gave the stalk a flick and shes all go again. Hell yeah hiluxs rule
