$12k - What to get?

Postby MINTFX » Sun Jan 08, 2006 4:20 pm

Hey, Im just curious as to what everyone here would buy car wise if they had $12000 to spend. Must be able to insure it for an 18yr old with full licence. Prefer non turbo as insurance would be more and the petrol bill would be big (with the way I would drive it). Cars like Levins, Corollas, Integras etc with good power. Also GT4s, WRXs, not sure about insurance costs on those though. So what would YOU get if you had $12k to spend on a car, Im just wanting to explore my options.

i think if i had $12k to spend on a car at the moment, i would get something for abotu 6-7k and save the rest. or maybe spent 1k on the audio.

however if this was for someone else who was looking at buying a fun car to thrash about in every so often, i dont think you could go past nissan or toyota.

there are quite a few options in that price range.

gtirs are getting fairly cheap these days.....

sad as it sounds id say get something with plenty of options out there or eg a 5 grand or so Honda Teg then spend some money on the thosands of parts you can get..

People tend to be happyer with any car they " Do lots to " rather than cruiseing around in a dead stock more expensive car. But i guess it all comes down to personal preferance and choices not to mention what you want out of it.

But you are lucky there are thosands of options around within the bracket your spending.

Yea good point. I was looking at getting an Integra Type R but for $12k its too much for what it is. Ive always like WRXs so I might pop into state insurance and price some insurance up on different cars.

* CM5A Lancer GSR
* BZ Touring Corolla Wagon
* BZ Touring Carib Wagon
* Type R Integra
* Evo 1

Id personally stay away from a WRX. They are very unreliable from what I have heard.

Cheers for the snwtoy but not the sorta direction I was looking at. I want something newer than 1992 but not a european. Im more into the turbo or powerful NA japer crappers. Heres a possible list so far:

GTIR
WRX
Skyline?
Integra

I know the Integra is $1500 a year for insurance but im not sure about the others.

Hmmmm. My dad is a mechanic so im pretty sweet with services and maintenance on it. Evo 1 might be another choice but again insurance is the real killer. A 20v Levin or something is out of the question as ive never really been a fan of those cars. Maybe just an Integra Type R lowered with some nice 17s is the best choice, cheaper on insurance and less running costs/maintenance compared to a turbo car. And its a semi new car so itd be nice to drive compared to my FXGT, power steering, electrics and aircon etc.

:lol: I would say a Carib BZ-T, side steps the typical boyracer/hothatch mould, delivers a decent punch and is fun without the dramas of other vehicles ie theft/cops etc....

Oh and i have a nice one complete with some pretty wicked suspension for sale real soon :wink:

You could almost definitely import a GTT for that much..
Good luck finding an evo 1 for 12k that hasn't been crashed/blown up/raped etc :)

Although, I wouldn't bother with a 2l turbo car at 18... you'll do something silly with it..

I agree. I like them alot, but I hate the fact the 1.6L engine has bugger all torque. Its good once it gets past 5000RPM, but I find im always having to change gear in my bloody wagon to maintain the same speed up hills or to overtake. I miss my 1800 familia, it would pull up steep hills @ 2000rpm no problems, and easilly pass without having to drop it into 3rd gear.

Ever thought of a GTX or GTR (plus a bit left over for a few gearboxes?). Still along the same lines as your FX-GT hot-hatch :D .

Yea I wouldnt look at getting an Evo1 or VR4 as theyre mostly worn out. And yea I would definatly end up doing something stupid with heaps of power. Coming from a bluetop 4AGE itd be a little bit of a difference :lol: As ive said before I would rather have a really nice example with low ks Integra Type R than a high kms nackered Evo/VR4. Ive always loved the Caldina GTTs so that might be another option aswell, But I wouldnt have any money to mod it.
