$12k - What to get?

Yea my next car when I have a bigger budget will be a facelift S14 k's.

For a rough idea on insurance Im 18 with a modified vr4 and full insurance is $1500 from National Auto Club for $7500 cover. Dont go for a WRX as they aint that quick unless they are STI and for a STI youd be looking at not one of the best for 12k. Personally i dont like Hondas so Type R wouldnt be an option for me. I test drove a nice st205 gt4 from a dealer with less than 100ks and in mint condition for 13k. Caldina gtt's are nice aswell and you could get a very nice libero also if you like wagons. Id get a vr4 but im biased otherwise id spend 6-7k on a nice low ks standard gsr(92-95) and do the basics and save the rest, or you could buy a nice ae101 gtz levin/trueno for abit cheaper insurance and once again save half

Hmmm, so many choices WRX = No, Evo/GSR/VR4 = No. GTI-R is still a possibility but id rather not stay with a hatch. The main purpose of the car would be to get my to polytec/work and back, and also to let it rip out on the track the occasionally weekend. I will have to ring up NAC and price up some insurance, Not sure though as people have told me theyre a real b!tch to pay out? Ive still got 6mnths to make my final decision, Looks like itll be a hard one. I had also considered dumping a blacktop 20v into my FXGT but id much rather have a newer, nicer car to drive.

or a soarer for 7k, spend 3k on making it manual, and 1k on powering it up a bit

1K on a Soarer aint gunna do shit.
And you can EASILY get either a V8 or Twin Turbo Soarer for 5K and below nowadayz if you look around a bit.

Intake and exhaust on a 1uz will make a much bigger difference than on a type r .

You can pick up non-turbo one's for nothing, or mint manual R32 and R33's for less than $12k

Hmmm yea I will have to check out some prices with that. Also a soarer would be pretty sweet, Gas guzzler though? What is the V8 like compared to the V6 Twin Turbo? I had also thought about a skyline, there is the occaisional nice one I see on trademe but nothing that catches my eye with those cars.

Do you want: A fast car, something you can get sideways, or what?

So far people have suggested: Front drive, 1600cc wagons + 2 doors (toyota/honda things), Big 4WD fast whales (vr4 / legacy / wrx / GT4 ), big RWD whales ( soarer/skyline ), and lightweight turbo drift cars (silvia)...

From experience - I got my first turbo 4WD at 18, never had issues and never looked back since. I know plenty of 25 year olds who shouldn't have fast cars cause they're fckwits on the road, best option is just get thrown in the deep end in my opinion - experience counts for more than age, and there's only one way to get experienced!

Buy a stock car - be it a VR4, evo, silvia, skidline, whatever, just something DECENT - in stock form they are pretty tame, and probably as quick in a straight line as a modified 20V anyway so your not gonna get in too much trouble. Difference is, spend 2K on it and you'll get results you can actually feel and measure, as opposed to intake noise and 5hp at 8000rpm

Well, what I'd do first, is make a short list of cars you like the look of, then try to see if you can get insurance for them.

I am guessing that with your age, turbo cars are going to cost you an arm and a leg to insure. If you haven't got a regular decent income, then personally I would avoid the WRX / Evo / GTiR / GT4 options. Reason being, as a general rule of thumb, they are more likely to break expensive things than a less stressed 2wd non turbo car.

Maybe look at one of the more subtle options like a AE101 or AW111 GT sedan. Still got all the good running gear, but they're a bit less likely to get nicked (unless you put a good stereo or theft magnet mags on it).

Silvia? Turbo yes, but they're a famously strong car. Might be an insurance nightmare.

Nissan Pulsar VZR? Good HP 1600cc, lots of nice bits straight out of the factory, and you can get them in at two door coupe, hatch, sedan, wagon. GTi for less HP but a decent 1800cc drive anyway.

The key is to buy something you can afford. Otherwise life will suck if you crash it, or it breaks something.

My choice is pretty much down to the Type R and Silvia S14. The silvia will most likely cost more to run, fix, insure etc so as youve said Leon the non turbo FWD is the best option.

As for what im looking for in a car. Something that is quick in a straight line for the occasional blat down the motorway. Something semi cheap to mod and easy to maintain. Something that will hold up and love getting a good blow out around manfield occasionally and is generally fun to drive. Not really looking for a drifter/drager at this point in my life, maybe when im older im just looking for a decent road car that I can daily drive it during the week and let it rip on the track with nothing going wrong and being overly expensive to fix. Something N/A seems to be the best option at this point.

Theres little difference economy wise between the two, and as SK said (and probably knows all too well ), $1k doesn't go far even for intake and exhaust mods.

If you're after one I'd go for the 3.0 2JZ powered one, but I'm guessing it might not be quick enough for what you want (or at least feel like it)

You've pretty much limited yourself wanting insurance (which is a good thing) but when you're 18, most cars that are worthwhile spending the extra from 6-7kish price bracket would cost a fortune to insure.
