Blacktop 4AGE Q's

Postby Lanci » Mon Jan 09, 2006 5:59 pm

Hi guys,

Did a search and found nothing definitive so here goes,

What oil is recommended for the engine? From what I saw anything over 10 grade and not fully synthetic, is this correct? (I was thinking of using Castrol magnatec).

Do these engines have a habit of chewing through oil even when in perfect condition? (I currently use 1 litre of oil per 2 months, that is grade 5-50)

Help much appreciated,

Lance

depending on the mileage the car has on it, 1l per 2months aint bad- pleantly of people on this site who's 20v's use about that.
In the castrol range the magnatec will be fine. Ifg you switch to say 10w-40 rather than the 5w50 you are now, it might use a little less.
Cant believe im still a member here.

If its good enough for toyota its good enough for you.

Yes; the 20v's seem to consume oil. I spoke to a mechanic at Toyota who reckoned its due to the valve seals hardening and oil escaping. He said most 4 cycl Toyota engines have a thirst for oil.

Im not sure how much I use in litres, but for every 1500kms the oil will drop from the max level on the dipstick to just over the lowest level on the dipstick.

I use Castrol Magnatec and had no problems.

If you don't rev your engine too high most of the time Magnatec would work fine. But if you want better protection, fully synthetic would definitely be the choice - Magnatec is only semi-synthetic.

I don't know if it's marketed in NZ, but Castrol has the Castrol Formula RS fully synthetic with a 10W-40 grade that works quite well.

I also used Castrol SLX Fully synthetic 0W-30 when I used to drag and found no problem whatsoever...but this would be dependent on your engine's condition.

I use magnatec - runs great.

Uses a bit of it too (apprx. 4 litres every few months) especially on long trips or on occasions when my accelerator foot feels suprisingly heavy...

my blacktop lives at redline regulary and does 3-4000k's a month and
drinks around half a litre of cheap ass regular repco oil a month. Not often really i have to top up on 5000k oil changes.
currently beating - AE101 Sedan, blacktop/6spd, tein coilovers, braided lines, cup holder, and every other bloody thing possible.

I've heard or read somewhere that fully synthetic isn't the oil of choice for a 20valve ... to do with the vvt I think?

I use magnatec 10W40 in mine and it seems to go just fine. Both black and silvertops are known for being thirsty oil-wise.
