i raced one on the motorway, it made more noise than jumbo jet and changed down a few gears.(doin 80kph)
i left it in 5th and once i realised he wanted a go, i put my foot down.
by the time i was at 150 he was several car lengths behind

next time i should change down too

Beavers car went bloody when it was going. For a fwd 2ltr it was damn impressive. The gearboxes were the let down..

I heard they go very hard, but they tend to be quite unreliable. I know an auto-sparky who also said they can be a bit of a pain to work on.

You've raced against every model and make of car on the motorway. This aint the place to be telling us about it.

Yeah but what times and mph was the tomcat doing? 4wd vs fwd too. Not to mention bad reaction times can make a faster car lose everytime. We need more info other than 'I beat one in my evo a few times'

Sorry I don't have the slips anymore (this was about 3 years ago) - from memory mid 15s.. but that's a guess.

Yes, but essentially, those are only reliability fixes, not so much performance, you're basically only repairing/replacing what the factory didn't get right! Why should you spend $4K making a $4K car reliable, but not much faster? If you want a stupidly fast FWD, get an Integra and turbocharge it, it would probably be more reliable that a FACTORY turbocharged Tomcat!

No offence intended, but a lot of comments here by people who don't actually have any personal experience whatsoever with these cars
Rover actually built a lot of the shells and Honda badged them as Concertos etc. Honda never actually used the Tomcat shell - the Tomcat being the Coupe version. The 220 GTi is a 3dr hatch.
Both run a 1998cc 16v DOHC engine which is pure Rover. No Honda input there whatsoever. 197bhp @ flywheel with a T25 Garrett turbo.
PG1 gearbox is Honda derived and runs a Torsen diff.

If abused, then they can be unreliable. However, don't trash the @rse off of it, change the oil etc often and it will last. Same really for most cars.
Not at all difficult to work on - especially when you compare it to a GT4!

Decent power can be acheived. Mine was seeing over 170kW @ wheels on 12.6psi and managed a 14.01sec 1/4mile at Meremere on a damp track.

Sure, they do see to have a bad rep here - but most of that is because people know sod all about them, mod them incorrectly up and then wonder why they cr@p out.

Riight.. I've worked on 2 of them now, both were far from even remotely driven hard, yet both were falling to pieces.

Rover = Shit.

Only experience I had was hearing one going down meremere drag strip, the thing sounded really quick (ie: jet engine), but it didn't look like it won any races that day. Was quite a while ago.

At the time, i was seriously waiting for it to blow clouds of blue smoke from turbo overspeed (as that what it sounded like).
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.
