GTT Mods...must have

I have 97 GTT manual. Has cat emptied out, Rage Big bore from cat back, HKS filter that goes into standard airbox and very keen to wake up this sleeping giant some more. If you have experience on this subject I would appreciate your tips starting from the easiest to the hardest mods coz me way to busy to do myself and would need to get them done professionally.

you tryed searching, heck ive struggled to find my own threads. I think the code for searching is pritty wack its So loose.

Search for " 3sgte " and you Will get Nothing but bad suggestions. Check it out for your self. Heres an Eg.

That's what it has to do with the 3sgte :)

Anyway, next mod for the gt-t: Front mount intercooler (but not a massive one if you want good response)

nothing (much) in stock form. however the fuels in NZ are not good. so you risk detonation etc. when doing up the car.

(even stock this is a risk)


Its not totally neccessary to do the ECU but its definitely a great plan in the long run.,however if you are like me and have a tiptronic a replacement ecu is not an option, so one way kind of around this is to do what I do and make up your own fuel.

but if you read some of fivebobs detailed posts he explains well why its better to spend the money from the start.


ok. cautionary advice out of the way heres some things to do.

- No need to swap BOV from a performance aspect.
- move the battery to the boot.
- extend the air intake pipe to create a bit of a "ram Air"
- Catch can.
- boost controller.
- Lightweight Alloy Exhaust turbine. (not steel, will increase lag.)(only need to do this if you are thinking of running more than about 1.2 or 1.3 bar as I think thats what the stock turbos are rated at.)

--Auto Only Options--
- VSC Switch.
- Stall Converter Upgrade.
- Transmission cooler upgrade

oh and as far as front mounts go, Im going to be installing pre and post intercool temperature settings and getting some actual data on the efficiency of the top mount. (then hopefully I can find some one to do the same on a front mount!)

Nothing, its just one of the better ways to make power on an EFI engine. A caldina is no different to any other 2L turbo car, just use normal tuning ideas.

As for whats the "first" thing you should do - depends on your goals.

Outright, huge power? Or just a bit more punch?

Personally the first thing I do on a car is throw in a decent fuel pump, THEN start playing with it.

Intercooling is well worth doing. For anyone who starts going on about better response etc with a top mount - hush. Mates legacy has well and truly schooled me on the pointlessness of a top mount on a street car. And a big front mount, while in theory possibly making response slip a little - in truth, the time taken to come on boost is about ---><--- that much more than with a little one.

Lag can get bent if you gain 15hp from doing something.

ECU - Factory tuning is always conservative. There are gains to be had from tuning here, but its nowhere near as cheap.

Like I always ask people when they come in... Whats your budget?

dont go just turning up the boost and stuff like that
all it will do is blow up unless you spend the big bucks to do it properly!

Im not disagreeing with you here... but lets not go down the Apples v Oranges path.

the caldina has all sorts of differences to the legacy as far as the top mount design goes...

(my vote for worst top mount ever goes to the SSS Attessa Bluebird.)


In the long run a front mount is always going to have the advantages. and performance aside.
they just look Cool!
but yet again it all comes down to budget.
one thing id love to do is route a ram air from the bonnet scoop (like the Herrod XR8s

that would be sweet.

IME an uprated pump is not needed until well in excess of 300whp, the stock pump is more than capable. BTW does anyone know where I can get the flow rates of the stock pump checked, can't be bothered setting up to test it myself.

Be careful in transferring your experience of other makes to Toyotas, IME the factory 3S-GTE ECUs are rather aggressive in their timing, at least for our fuel. Although the fueling is conservative (read pig rich), it's not necessarily safe.

There are gains to be had from tuning here, but its nowhere near as cheap.

Far cheaper than a blown engine. :oops:

yeah but they go much better with turbos, I dont see anyone going for the supercharger conversion.

Fair comments really. Hence why I mentioned the fuel pump - its cheap insurance, and saves me having to worry about how much the 10 year old factory pump is really capable of.

1. Just want to get more punch, not the major workover.
2. Hoping I can get a good result for around 2k but I have no idea what stuff costs.
