Cars: Light or Heavy?

Postby Malcolm » Fri Jan 13, 2006 8:38 pm

Alright, I was wondering what everyone's preference is.

Over the last few years I've become more and more into lightweight cars. In fact I would hope not to be owning another car much over 1,000kg unless it's a tow car or something, and I really, really want a Fraser or similar one day :D

In case you were wondering, the above cars are basically based on:
AW11 MR2 (stripped) with worked 3S-GE
SW20 MR2 (stripped) with worked 3S-GTE
JZA80 Supra (I don't have an accurate idea of how much they weigh) with a worked 2JZ-GTE

but that doesn't necessarily mean that if you vote for option a: then you prefer an aw11 over a sw20 or jza80

Light weight, for sure. 8)

I want to get an MX5 at some stage, strip the hell out of it, repower it with something decent, and get some grunty tires for it.

Call 'em girls cars all you want, but a 900kg MX5 with 220ish HP would be an awesome car to drive.

Either that, or an SW20 with a VVTI motor. :P

I used to like lightweight cars, before I was in a couple that got written off....Now I'm happy in my 1700 odd kg Soarer :D

Still wouldn't mind a Fraser for track fun though, or a 1UZ MK3 Supra

Id rather have the 450 hp 1500 kg car. But the fuel use would suck.

To put this weight factor into perspective...

If you have an empty shopping trolley and movie it around its quite fast and twitchy... But if you have a rather full one its sluggish and hard to turn. :o

Much like a light car vs a heavy car.

So quite obvious the light cars going to accelerate faster and turn faster

If all cars had independant front wheels, no suspension and the heavy ones centre of gravity was extremely high, then yes....that would be a rather apt comparison.

It depends on where you live, and how you drive your car I suppose....

A small nimble car will be more fun to drive around the waitakere ranges, while a larger, more powerful car would be more fun on the motorways, long cruises, etc. etc.

However since 80% of my driving is through the waitakere ranges, and to various beaches, my decision is the light weight car. 8)

Ahh well in that case, I'd go for the SW20 with worked 3SGTE. Only because I find the SW20 very easy on the eye :) and why the hell not have it go like stink! :)

Failing that, I'll stick to my RS Mirage race car. Under 900kg, 141 HP and very nibble

For me, it would depend on where it was being driven, as Roman said.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Tough call...I'd go for the heavyweight beast probably, for those 300kph Wangan runs lightweight cars would get a bit skittish
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

Lighter cars accelerate faster, brake faster and turn better 8)

Pity they're always noisy, have less comforts and completely f*** you over in a crash.
