Installing silencer

got a silencer for my muffler...gotta drill a hole in teh side to bolt it in (what can i use to do this? i tried an ordinary drill but no way was it gonna drill through the steel muffler)...and also where is the best place ti place it...as close as possible to the opening of the muffler? or as far in as i can? i tried jsut putting the silencer in (wihtout bolt) and starting the car but it made no notcieable difference in noise at all....aaany light you can shed would be much appreciated

first make a small dent where you want to drill (you can use nail+hammer combination a bit doddgy but it works) it will help the drill bit to stay in one place (especially on round surface).second don't use drill bits which are made in china (they are made out low grade steel, can barely drill aluminium). and third use low speed drill (prefferably not made in china as well) as high speed one will overheat the bit and it will become soft and blunt.

note that if the silencer is "easily removeable"you will fail a wof

He can put a rivet instead of a screw. it slighty harder to remove (still takes ~30sec to do it)...

yeh not worried about thw WOF aspect...thanks for the installation tips but what about hte location of it (further in or near the tip) and the fact taht i put it in (without bolt) and it made no noticable difference to noise?

I put 3 bolts on mine 2 on the side and one down the bottom.....

I used and hammer and a punch to make the dent then drilled....you have to push down quite hard so my suggestion is to get a block of 2x4 or sumthing to hold the exhust up as your drilling it....

On my caldina after i installed it, it did reduced the noise by quite a bit but also i lost about 3psi on boost.....(i took it back out..!!!)

how on earth did u guys get the hole in ur exhaust i jstu went and had antoehr go and can hardly even get an indent in it

the secret is: hole punch, drill bit made in NZ for steel drilling, low speed drill, high pressure. Ohh yeah and don't forget to secure the exhaust, if hole is bigger then 5mm try first something like 3mm drill bit then go larger.

I used a tapperd / cone drill bit made for drilling steel. Started it off with a hole punch.

Modified the silencer though, made the tube longer, with perforated steel tube, made a lot of difference.
