aha so i did it today. it fixed the idle problem but still backfires when slowing down ?
chicken fillet and bacon with everything except onion and bbq, ranch and southwest sauces

Bit of fuel going out the exhaust, nothing major ;)

Not sure how your 4k is modified but with a 4k you can run a 3kb head with a 3kb inlet manifold and twin carbies. It works bloody well especially if you match port the inlets.

Is the engine stock standard just with the exhaust?

Try turning the mixture screw anti-clockwise half a turn.
