sorry i didnt really say but the cambelt didnt break clean, it was still intact when i went in. I guess it just slipped half off or something - does this make any more sense now? perhaps it continued going around after it initially failed, bending more valves. The mechanic did mention, it would have been better if it had just broke.
When this happened I was just driving along in 3rd or 4th gear, doing around 3.5krpms - nothing major. It simply cut out, there were no loud bangs or scrapes which is why I was very surprised to hear there was actual damage.

If the 5S-FE engine was an interferance engine and the belt sliped a few teeth, then yes it would bend a lot of valves. But its not so i still cant see how it did it....

hey guys
in the 3 years ive been with toyota i havnt seen a 3s or 5s bend valves at all same goes for 4afe and a few others but not diesels
on friday i worked on a rav which had a tbelt skip by alot and just put a new belt on it and it was fine
it has a 5sfe

Thanks for the help guys. On monday I am going to call AA, and get them to send someone in to check it all out, make sure the mechanic is legit and has diagnosed the car properly. WIll let you know what comes of this some time next week...

Tow it to Albany Toyota.
I would give those guys 5 stars for their service and workmanship. My mate spent $2k trying to fix the suspension on his GT4 between 3 mechanics, then I suggested he take it into Albany Toyota, and they had it fixed in an hour for $40.
Seriously, go to someone who specialises in Toyota's and knows their stuff.

cost $2400 including GST to get it all fixed up. I looked into chucking a secondhand engine in there, but by the time I had got to that stage a lot had already been done on it. I am still wondering how the damn valves got bent in the first place....

nah, my car had already been towed, initially inspected, the head taken off and sent to an engine reconditioner for a quote. At that stage I decided to just go ahead with it - everyone has a different opinion about how much it would cost to replace the engine and I dont know enough about it to make that decision. On the bright side, this way half my engine is practically new
