Santa's Track Car - AE92

Postby Santa'sBoostinSleigh » Wed Jan 25, 2006 2:03 pm

well as some of you may know, i've acquired myself an AE92 Corolla, and it looks like this will become my track car.
eventually it will be caged, and will be kept road legal
i have a blacktop motor and LSD gearbox to go in, along with a pair of bucket seats, aftermarket s/wheel and a couple of sets of 15" mags.

but what other fun things should i add/do?

suspension setup?
exhaust setup/size?
other mods/tips/hints/ideas?

car will be used in track events, car club events and such like :)

(please dont post rubbish or things like 'cool' - it will be deleted, there is a button that says 'watch this topic', you dont need to post something to follow whats going on)
cheers in advance
Andrew

A) suspension
b) Brakes
c) good quality seat ie:racetech FIA approved item and an FIA approved harness with 5 year lifespan

My set up has worked well for a general use club car, without spending much money.

King Springs (could easily be substituted with TRD), not super low.
KYB shocks, good for the cost
Whiteline rear sway bar ( @#)(@#)@#)ing fun)
Mintex 1166 pads in the front

I think this is much the same as Disturb has in his car too, maybe different brake pads?

Yep, im running the same setup as leon, but i'll elaborate a lil bit. Its quite basic, and is the same as i ran at manfield on the weekend.

Kyb Shocks - Just standard replacement spec, nothing flash
Low King springs - not superlows
Whiteline 20mm adjustable rear swaybar - provides maximum grin factor
Mintex M1166 Compound pads
Custom Braided Brake Lines

Shocks and springs i got from Stocks, Swaybar from Mr Revhead, Pads from 0800 Racebrakes, and the Braided lines from ABC

Prices on all of the above i cant say.

Personally i rekon you should get the stuff you already have in the car and up and running :D

What about the fluids side of things D ???

Standard middle of the road or have you stepped it up a notch or two there as well?

Better brake fluid ... can't recall what. Picked it up from BNT at a reasonable price. Wasn't silly price race fluid or anything flash, just good off the shelf stuff. Also, as Andrew said, keep it fresh.

Springs ~ $400
Shocks ~ $250?
Swaybar ~ $300
Pads ~ $120

that's all total ballpark figures from vague recollections.

Plus, if you turbo a 1600cc the rating for motorsport events is suddenly multiplied by 1.7. So your 1600cc car is now 2720cc as far as what class you are placed in.

Generally speaking, this is a baaaaaad place to be as far as your in class results go.

you'll generally find at motorsport events that 1601-2000 class has less competitors and is easier to win

apart from the fact that there are oodles of CRX's, Civics and Integras which power to weight whip the shit out of ae92's unfortunatley

Good plan,
Get the car going with what you have. Bolt everything in that will bolt in from your AE111.
Then once it is running you can decide if you need adjustable height coilovers etc. Most guys I race against just run standard suspension setup with higher rate springs and new shocks, nothing fancy.

I presume you will be keeping road legal? It's a good idea if you have the option of driving your car to an event... saves having to own a trailer. You can borrow a trailer if the event is a long way from home.
Talk to a certifier before you start modding bits to fit. This will make it easier to get it certed if the guy is in the loop from the beginning.

Superstrut brakes:
I'm getting my Marino certified tomorrow. Amongst other things, I have put superstrut brake disk and caliper and modified non superstrut hub onto the car. Talk to me about how this was done and what the certifier said when I showed him the hubs and brakes.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Apart from the fact that unless that have B18C's in them which most dont, they aren't in the 1601-2000 class. Most run B16 and are in class B 1301-1600

Yep you should consider these, ive been tempted as but never seem to have enough money

Sounds like its going to be awsome. Black top in an ae92 should be very competitive.

What are you doing with the small port?

If it were me i'd just take it out as is for now, just on a few gym khanas and get used to the cars ability without going straight to big power, coil-overs, etc.
