how to replace 20v head gasket?

Postby deaf_rattle » Wed Jan 25, 2006 10:01 pm

has anyone done the headgasket in their silvertop 20v?
can it be done with the motor in place?

and i have been told that the front cover is in two parts, so that makes it easy enough to take the top part out to get planed with the head.

anyone got any tips, and how long will it take.

i am tempted just to take it to the mechanics so they can do it while im at work

cheers

deaf_rattle, planing the cam belt/pulley cover?

No offence intended but I think you should take up your own suggestion & leave it to the mechanics.

Yea, I haven't done one on a 4age, but i sure its all much the same. Just following instructions. (that is if you have a manual) If you can do an engine swap you should be able to do a head gasket.

oH come on Matt!!!

You own a 7M...I would have thought you would be able to change a headgasket blindfolded with one hand tied behind your back by now... :P

it is best to dissasemble as much as possible (reasonbly) as it will make easyer to put back everything together, and save a lot of time getting to tricky places while it the bits are still hanging off. It pays to change cambelt/tensioner/cam seals/valve stem seals while you are at it...

Here's the 'Engine Mechanical' section of the blacktop manual. Few differences with the silvertop but it gives you a good idea on the process.

sorry butt munch, i have done the head gasket on the 7mgte, and there is the front engine cover that needs to be planned as well. i just assumed the 4age would be the same.

should change your name to turd_man unless you are going to be helpful

The block decks should be resurfaced to the best finish available. Invariably the head gasket will have gouged the surface. Make sure that the aluminum timing cover is on the block when the deck is surfaced, or else the head gasket will not seal properly. We send the blocks and head to a special grinding outfit- that machines aircraft components, and they are able to surface to a mirror finish. Upgrade all the engine assembly bolts. Replace all the hoses. Keep a spare head gasket.
