Postby [A NINJA] » Thu Jan 26, 2006 8:16 pm

Hey all, right te o. I have a 97 carib BZT (black top 4A-GE) 6spd, Its got 110k on the clock, its been well mantained etc. I overtook someone just before and it blew out big smoke from 4k-7500RPM. any ideas whats wrong. I continued home giving it a little of gas to see if smoke came out, and every time it blew a little smoke. I was a gray looking smoke and I barely thrash my car and I always let it warm up before driving.

please help!!!

You've got a different ECU dont you? Japanese "tuned ROM"s tend to have lots of fuel and lots of timing, so its probably dumping way more fuel than it needs. If you got hold of a stock ECU, it'd more than likely stop.

when idling open your oil cap (slightly) and see you have smoke coming out of there and if the cap is pushed out (bad) or sucked in (good). also take off the intake pipe and see if you have exsessive oil in there...
check exhaust black stuff in it feels greasy. Does it puffs smoke in the mornings just after you started it?
Take of spark plugs and check if the are covered in oil or exsessivly black.
Thats about it what you can do without leak down/compression test.
Also could be BHG (highly unlikely- otherwise it that stage would be running on 3 cylinders under load)..

i doubt it would be blow by.. its just running rich when he puts his foot down and more than likley when its on vvtil... w\maybe retard the timing a litlle but i dont know if that would have any detrimental effects...

my SARD ecu cleaned up my black smoke, not blows grey :D
.... 20vs run quite rich stock. mine chugged like a train on the stock ecu

hard to say with out seeing it but grey smoke is normal with these under full throttle.

Go and see Chickenman at BP2Go Halswell - They are constantly being supplied 98 octane.

Anyway - A few months ago I got home and locked the car and went to go inside - walking behind my car and smoke was coming from the exhaust - but my uncle said it was related to the cat as it had only been used for driving round town.

He told me to take it some where and give it a "GOOD BLOW OUT"!!!

Which I did and I havn't had the problem since.

Maybe not constantly but we're higher in the pecking order so we usually have it.

If not at least put some octane boost in the 95. I remember Alycias car before redline on 96 and it used to feel... "soft" probably because the ecu was pulling back the timing too much. 98 is an improvement but I still wouldn't go thrashing a blacktop on our fuels mercilessly.
