Timing help

Postby slighty_sykotic » Sun Jan 29, 2006 9:44 pm

Hey,

Ive just put an aw11 gze (dizzy and afm) motor into my ae101.

After completly rewiring the loom (the old loom was trashed) its now sparking and firing injectors etc as it should.

So, now onto timing.

But I can't see the dam timing marks 8O :?

Can someone tell me where the timing is checked on a aw11 normally? Is it from the side (hole in panel maybe?) or from the top?

On the pulley I can see 3 marks, two close together, and one further back. The one futher back is on a flat spot of the pulley.

I will take a picture tomorrow, but in the meantime, it looks like this:

Is that what it is meant to look like? and if so, what marks mean what...

Thanks,

Mark the marks with something white (twink, paint pen etc), pull a spark plug out and find where TDC is then see what marks line up with anything. Marks will probably be TDC, 10°BTDC and 15°BTDC. Or maybe 8 and 10, someone should be able to clear that up :)

The mark on the flat bit is in line with the pointer from the cam tensioner at cylinder 1 TDC.

This also means that there are no marks that line up with any of the numbers on the timing cover.

Any advice?

theres that pointer, plus also marks on the cover that give you the degrees.... theres also a mark on the cam you can see if you look in the oil filler hole.

use the ones one the crank, look down from the top, make sure your dead above it. first mark is 0 2nd and 3rd is either 8 and 10 or 10 and 12. gunna have to check which as i cant recall exactly.....

on the cover some times it says 15 10 5 0 5 where the last 5 is actually -5....
so you have to line up first mark on the crank pulley to 0, or the best way to line up the mark on cam belt sproket (on the crankshaft) to dot on oil pump housing, as the harmonic balancer can twist slightly and marks would be off...
