7mgte's random questions.

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Sun Jan 29, 2006 2:21 pm

Hey,

The early 7mgte supra's 1986ish were these engine any good?

What sort of sort of k's should be expected, before a rebuild is needed, from one behind an auto?

I hear the 7mgte eats headgaskets for lunch is this true? Is it a cnut to work on the engines (headgasket, turbo removal, etc)?

Were they all twin turbo? (the one for sale says its had a single turbo conversion).

I've also seen 7mgte's in early hilux/surf's, is this because its a relatively easy conversion?

How hard is it to find a w5* bellhousing to fit the 7m?

Im sure I'll think of some more questions, im just interested because theres a high k's supra turbo for sale and I've always wanted an early surf but don't want a gutless POS.... and I'm bored.

Cheers in advance....right im off to the beach.

Depends how its been treated as to how long til it'll be wanting a rebuild.

They are quite well known for their headgasket issues, main problem being that the head/block is fairly soft. Get that sorted through your engine guy and it shouldn't give you too many more hassles.

7M-GTE were single turbo, 1G-GTE was a twin turbo. You'll find that there are GA70 (1G-GTE, 2L twin turbo) and MA70 (7M-GTE, 3L single turbo) Supras of that vintage. If it was twin turbo then I'd be picking it to be a 2L with a single turbo conversion. There are the odd few JZA70s around also, but I think they were only the very late model but I'm sure someone will correct me on that one.

The JZs were '89 i think at the earliest.

'86 only came with the 1G 2L TT and the 7M 3L single.

Finding a bellhousing isn't that hard, its finding the other pieces that turn into a nightmare

And they are all bastards to work on, no room in the engine bay.

The 7m's wern't really made strong enough for the power they are capable of pushing, but if u treat them right, all is merry.

try to get a later model one if you can, but dont worry too much if you dont.

unless you are certain that the motor is in good nick i would pull apart and rebuild regardless.

These motors are very good if they are maintained properly, but to find one that has been looked after is very hard. Even my one that had 89000kms on it had a bhg and the oil pump wasnt working.

7mgtes never came standard with twin turbos

7mgtes bolt into some of the older hiluxes i believe, and the gearboxes bolt up to the m series bellhousing. i believe its fairly straight forward to do the conversion, and the wiring shouldnt be too difficult.

not hard to find a gearbox to suit but the m series bellhousing is very hard to find.

AS for the head gasket thing, arp head studs and torque it down correctly and you will be sweet.

Thanks guys.

Just thinking about possiblities at the moment. You can never have too many cars, you can only have too little money.

I wonder what a hilux surf would be like with a 3L turbo, I guess a it'd depend on gear ratio's and tyre size etc.

Easier to buy one with the 1UZ conversion. See a few of them round.

Surf's go GREAT with a 2JZGE
my page is http://strx7.250x.com/index.htm

the 2JZ is a alot better motor than the 7M is. Superior technology & alot newer for a start. Low k's motors can me picked up on TM for under $1K with ECU and loom.

You have to custom a bell housing cause one cant be brought for it, but if you used a 2L type box instead of a 1KZ/3VZ type box you can buy a bell housing for it.

I'm currently getting 27mpg outta it.
the T04 is going on later in the year :)

my 7ms not a bastard to work on when you spend a few hours under the bonnet you quickly learn the ins and outs, and its all quite simple

a head gasket fixed properly and you have no problems they just get a bad name due to toyotas factory mistake and poeple not fixing the head gasket issue properly when they have a BHG
