Car idles and stalls

Postby Zyros » Wed Feb 01, 2006 4:02 pm

Hey, just recently ive noticed my car starting to like bunnyhop almost in third or fourth gear.. this happend 2 days ago.. now i cant even get up a hill in first from my driveway..

I rev the car to say about 3000RPS, then start slipping the clutch to move up the hill and the revs start moving up as i accelerate then BOOM they just drop... down to 0.. if i slam the clutch in from here i can save it from stalling..

Help?!?!

Same thing happened to my ae101 20v. I never figured it out completly (cause i pulled the motor and dropped in my 4agte, was good timing really :p).

But,

the coil was not outputting spark, and when it did, it was really erratic and weak. So the first thing was to replace that (with a working one from mate's car). That didnt change anything. Now, the ignitor seemed to be getting it's power/pulses etc on the input, but it wasnt telling the coil to fire.

So my guess would be the ignitior in my case, maybe same for yours?. Worth a trade with a mate for a few secs to test.

Wot sort of corolla have you got?

I think I might have the same problem  . My car felt like it lost a ton of power (not that it has that much) and feels really flat aroung 1500 - 4000rpm, and not as peaky as it used to be. When idling it pulsates sort of, like a dip in rpm every second or so, and if I rev it a little bit it stalls :? , but if I rev it to 3000rpm, it goes close to stalling then idles like crap again :( .

It's still drivable but I don't really want to untill I know the problem.

the random stalls and loss of power could be due to faulty fuel pump.

Spark plugs replaced, it still does it but the HT cap is totally rooted!! So im off to replace that, could it be the air filter by any chance??

Maybe one of the sensors or something.

if distributor cap is rooted, it is good Idea to replace it as it is not very expensive anyway (arround ~$45 for genuine)...

Mine turned out to be, the air intake.
It was coming loose where it connects to the intake manifold, all I did was put it on better and tighten the clamp, and it was fixed :? .
Not sure how that works though, as I figures that all that would be happening is that it's getting more air (albiet unfiltered), and if more air makes that sort of loss would happen if I had a pod?

Before or after the afm?

Its it was before, im guessing that wasnt your problem, more likey a ground that you knocked back in place when you tightened it.

Well if it was inbetween thorttle(s) and AFM, then the engine would suck more air then AFM was registering, creating lean mixture, and because of that and other reason (fuel cut circuit inside AFM) the car would stall.

Make sure there is plenty of fuel pressure. I had this same problem with my car. It would flow enough gas for it to run a little and stall under load.

New HT cap, Spark Plugs, Still no go!

I dont think it would be the fuel pressure as the car runs perfectly fine when the engines cold but when it warms up.. thats when my issue described takes place,,

trust me try look and see if you have a air suction leak, it sounds like its identical to what mine did, when you start it up does it idle real high, say 1800 rpm?

I would just borrow one to test it, expensive if its not the coil...

Got one from the wreckers, still hasnt fixed the problem argh!!

Its only when the car warms up, then you start feeling it jump back and forth and it gradually gets worse within a few minutes of driving untill you cant launch the car without stalling..

Any ideas?!?!

I have a new HT cap, Spark plugs, Coil, Coil wiring
